Yeah I lived in Smithdale for a few years - between Brookhaven and McComb. I know the I-55 route all too well. Once you get outside the Jackson city limits, 75MPH is about standard for 10-20 miles, then you can drop down to 60 and not get creamed.
Expect 32-35MPG at the higher speed. The Smart gets 27MPG at max speed (90 MPH) sustained. Drop down to 55-60MPH and you can get almost 50MPG or so on a level interstate.
Just keep in mind the Jackson Stack (55 meets 20) - you'll need practice to get a Smart up to speed when you merge. Some of those jackasses up there don't stop for even a Hummer.
SuperGeek has it nailed. We have been getting the same numbers, consistently. Best mileage was 51.3 just driving around flat paved roads in the country. 22k on the ode. A2Jack.
24K/ 2 yr warranty almost over, B. Did you get the extended coverage?
As of yesterday I am sitting at 23,970 miles. On Wednesday I'll hit 24k when I drive it next.
Nope - no extended warranty. I'll be the first to say.....I don't really trust warranties. I'm not a pessimist, far from it but I feel that they will find some loophole to get out paying you then you'll be stuck paying out of pocket AND for the extended warranty as well. Sorry, just one of those things as they leave a sick feeling in my stomach. All that being said - I have had over 100 cars and driven millions of miles.......if all goes well I've only lived half my life so far too. (knock on wood for that one)
Im averaging 43mpg travelling at 70-75 every day, all highway of course.
And no warantee (and out of warantee now) here either, for much the same reasons as the poster above.
Oh, and 34,000 ish miles now
Hey, bud. You're still cranking out the miles! I'm almost at 31k.
But NO WAY are you averaging 43 mpg at that speed. It's not possible. I'm really curious what you actually are getting for mileage, but I'm guessing it's in the high-30s at the most. I forget if you're recording all your fillups (obsessively, like me), but I had to drive fast today for only the third time since I bought the car. It kills me to drive over 65 because I know what I'm doing to the mpgs. Sho'nuff, when I got to New Paltz, my Scan Gauge told me I'd gotten only 34 mpg's for the 80-mile trip from The City. I averaged around 75 mph. It wasn't too windy, but the return trip IS a bit of an uphill. The same trip TO Manhattan might have netted about 36 mpg at most.

I assure you its true. I dont record my milage anywhere (like fuelly) but I always calculate it at fillup. I have only ever had one tank average below 40. My fillup this morning was at 252.3 miles and it took 6.03 gallons. So a bit below 43 on this tank but above 40 Actually the colder weather has seen a downturn into the 41-42 range. My average speed on the highway is right around 70 with some jaunts above and some below. I travel about 5 miles at either end of the main commute at lower speeds otherwise its an all highway run. When I first got her I tried keeping it at 60-65 and was able to get beteen 45 and 48mpg out of her that way, but doing 65 on 295 is NJ is just asking to get run over.
Don't feel bad, Unicycle likes to tell some of us we can't do the mileage. Shrug it off.
I believe you. Mostly freeway, speed "around 70" seems possible if you're a careful driver.
I dont feel bad and I think he is just seeking the truth and there's nothing wrong with that. Its also excessively flat here so that helps and while Im not an avid hypermiler I do employ some mild techniques when the opportunity presents itself.
Noone was more surpised than I when I stopped being speed consious and just started driving my normal drive and only saw a 2-5mpg drop off.
Wow. I guess the flat terrain really makes a huge difference. My ride's fairly mountainous, mostly downhill towards NYC and uphill on the way home, and lately it's seemed esp'ly windy (that is, filled with wind, with a short i). Still, I'm currently getting over 50 mpg on the tank I filled this morning (160 miles, using less than 3.25 gallons, so I could hit well over 400 miles on this tank). But that's with me averaging 55 mph or so.
So yeah, J, I believe you, and thanks (you and Dave777) for understanding where I'm coming from.
