Hit and run bumper question.

Got hit by hit and run driver yesterday. I'm feeling OK, but got hit about 25 mph and pushed in to car.

It appears that it damaged:

1. Back bumper - Crease
2. Plastic bracket that holds bumper to frame - Broken
3. Front bumper scuffed
4. Front Black Grill - Deformed

Has anyone replace body panels before? Do they look good as new, fit well?

It doesn't appear to have bent any frame pieces... Any way to easily tell?

Thanks for the feedback. Only had 4K miles, bummed at ugliness caused by idiot driver.

New panels look just like old panels. AS long as what they are attached to is not damaged.

Make sure you have your smart center check it out. Their may be little things your not seeing, or their may not be. But its worth getting them to look it over.

The bumpers have crashboxes and sliptubes in them. If your Tridion didn't take the hit (you said about 25mph) it's likely that the crashboxes took the hit and the sliptubes have separated.

Hit & Run? Did you get the guy yet?

Jeeez, Neon, I own a smart and I didn't know that !!

You know so much about these cars that I'll be asking you for advice !

When I was about your age, I knew everything there was to know about old Willys Army Jeeps (the ones you see in M*A*S*H). I owned one and damn near took it apart every other weekend "just because".

Are you gonna be like that with your smart ??

I'm still absorbing more info about the smart. I learned about the sliptubes thing about a month ago.

I plan to know everything there is to know about smart. I'm still finding things out as I go along...

Like I just learned about the tab on the seat preventing it from reclining all the way.
And some smarts' handbrake may need to be "calibrated" by driving in reverse...

Follow-up question. Do you have to pull the bumper panel to see the crashbox/slip tubes? Are they inside the frame where one of the brackets broke?

Thanks...

Gonna have a Smart Center replace... No Bubba Gump Body Shops...

As I don't have mine yet, I don't exactly know if they can be seen without removing the bumper.

But I suspect that they're hidden from view until the bumper is removed (or broken off).

If you use the information on www.evilution.co.uk you could remove the bumper and see if there's any further damage.

If I understood BabyBenz's post (#8 above) you can see them by looking from underneath the car.
