Horn just started beeping???

Hi... anyone have this happen before? My Smart was sitting in my garage all day... with the key in the ignition... (BTW - I don't have an alarm system in mine)... and I went to get something from the garage - and as I walked past the Smart - the horn just started blowing - quickly on then off - Kinda the same as if the panic alarm had been pressed, but obviously it wasn't that because the key was in the car! Any thoughts?

I don't know. Just a couple of questions:
-where is your second key? In a location where the panic button may be pressed?
-could it be that, if the key remains in the ignition but the car's not "on", it may be "talking" with the ignition and is therefor discharging; then the battery may require replacement? (Symptom would then be quick repeated beeps, about 9 of them, according to the manual.)
Good luck!

are you saying I shouldn't leave the key in the ignition when the car is sitting? The 2nd key hangs on a hook in the house... no way the button could have gotten presses... also, the timing would be incredible, as the horn started beeping exactly when I walked past the car and put my hand on it... the second I touched it, the horn starting blowing...

No, no. I was just saying that I don't know.
My car does have the alarm (it sleeps on the street most of the time).
As fas as I know, the "theft alarm" is just an added level of security with motion sensor in the cabin and towards the grounds (the latter to alert any unauthorised moving of the car).
Your symptoms are exactly as if you had the full alarm. Weird!
Can you duplicate?

"started beeping exactly when I walked past the car and put my hand on it".

It was just saying that it loved you and missed you and wanted to go for a ride.

Tell it you love it, go for a ride and treat it to 91 octane to prove your affection.

Don't leave the key in the ignition.... I've read a few posts where this has drained the key in the battery prematurely (don't know how valid it is, but why take the risk?)

wow... I've never heard of the battery in the key getting drained while its in the ignition... I'd be really curious to know if this is true... until then, I guess I'll take the key out.

Will the battery in the key recharge while driving? And does leaving the key in the ignition drain the cars battery faster than when it is removed? We split our time between two cities and often return to a dead smart battery if we are gone more than a month or so.
