I assume this isn't the first time you've left the key in the ignition? Obviously if it was the first time, and it it did this the answer is clear - must be an alert. But if you've done this (leave your key in) dozens of times, well I don't know. I assume the car isn't in the locked mode when you leave it this way, so I wouldn't think it would be interacting to your touch. But I agree with the others....probably not a good idea to leave the key in the ignition (.....say, where do you live??)

When parking my smart in my garage, I typically leave the key in the ignition. No battery problems.

yeah... my smart is in the garage all the time when not being driven... that is why I leave the keys in there.
