do you have an update on your poor mpg's?
what octane fuel are you using ?
try driving it in auto at all times. Our little one gets 39-42 with no difference if the air is on/off..
have your local dealer run a ECU diagnostic and see what the brain spits out..my2c

It's the same story here in the Mojave Desert...with the AC blowing full blast, and outside temps ranging from 90-105 F, the smartmobile gets about 32mpg... that's okay, at least I'm cool inside the smartmobile!

Smart milage

I drive 50 miles a day. Mostly hiway with the top down and windows up. I can't seem to keep my speed under 70 while on the hiway and drive agressively while in the city. The worst I've gotten is 37.5mpg and usually get 41-42. Fun car to drive - keeps me engaged. Had a Civic Hybrid before the Smart, best milage 37mpg and boring.

Are you saying then you routinely get ~ 50 mpg with your smart?

No,I am saying that I get about 49-50 on average, while my wife who drives it the bulk of the time gets 46-49. I have gotten as high as 53, and she has managed to get as low as 46. Our first few tanks were in the 35-39 range. The higher are our most recent results

We both do mostly highway driving about 23 miles one way to work, only about 3 of those 23 miles are in town miles. Rarely do we see another car on the road until we get to town. Our car has 6000 miles on it now, the milage did increase at about 2k, not because of the CAR break in, the transmisson "learning" thing I keep reading about etc. I think if everyone was honest they would agree it is because after about 2k YOU have made it through the learning curve with this car and its quirky transmission, YOU have passed the "seeing what it would do" stage, YOU have altered your habits.

Our drive looks something like this from home to work: Basically flat, 4 miles then stop turn left, 11 miles slow turn right, 5 miles stop, 3 miles through town that includes 2 stop signs and 2 stop lights.

Wife drives a little faster, uses a little more ac, coasts a lot less, takes off a little faster, shifts manually more than I.

My keys are this: Tire pressure at the max, coast 0.5 miles to those stops, drive with a very light foot on acceleration, drive in auto, dont use ac if not Africa hot, keep it at 55, take routes that cause you to stop less due to lights, signs, traffic etc.

wow, well that great! (I'm still waiting to get anything near 40 mpg!) Its so incredible how extreme the range of mpgs is with this car! Most cars I have been associated with in the past seem to vary only within a few mpgs above and below the norm.

Sounds like the short trips are the problem...

Is anyone getting bad gas mileage on long trips (50 miles plus)?

We average 44-45 per tank, half highway, half city and top down 90% of the time. Best tank was 47 all mountain highways (passing RV's too ;), worse was 37mpg all in town short hops. We have over 3,000 Idaho miles now.

Not sure who posted about not driving under 3,000 RPM but in our Smart, it's almost always under 3,000 (at least until 65mph). Audi has a V8 project in Europe that gets 45mpg, doing 100kph (62mph) at only 1200rpm. They found the sweet spot in the engine and geared it according to the speed.

Well here is a good question..
Let's say that a "friend" overfill the gas tank... and the warning ligth is on.... so now how he can fix this problem?
