All those who are dying to know get together, kick in the bucks to buy a gas tank thru the dealer, and award it to the person who guesses the closest to what will fill it. The tester gets to keep the gas.

Someone needs to ask Keeshethree in French how many liters it is and we can convert.
Keshyathree, bonjour/soir,
Quelle est la capacité réelle du réservoir?
Est-ce 33 litres au total, y compris 5 litres de "réserve"?
Ou 33 litres, PLUS 5 litres de réserve, soit 38 litres au total?
Merci!

I hold that there is no actual "reserve," only that the fuel gauge begins to count down some remaining amount in the tank in 10ths. Same for the "Metricos" - same for the U.S. The only question is, what is that remaining amount. And it is that remaining in the one tank, not some separate supply.
The U.S. Operators Manual is poorly constructed and poorly translated; much of its information is suspect. E.g., our manual says:
"Reserve fuel indicator
You are driving on reserve fuel if there are no
more than 1.0 US gal (3.78 l) of fuel in the
tank.
If this occurs,
• the fuel pump symbol in the fuel level
display flashes (OK, this is true.)
• the reserve fuel indicator shows the fuel
level in the tank at exactly 0.1 US gal (0.5 l)" (Nope, this isn't true for two reasons - the paragraph begins by saying you have no more than 1.0 USg, but then this phrase says the level in the tank is 0.1 USg. Furthermore, 0.1 USg does not equal 0.5 l, it equals 0.378 l.)
If those who should have their act together actually had it together, the U.S. smart owners would be told that it is counting down 1.32 USg by 0.13s not 0.10s, like the Metros count down their 5.0 l by 0.5s.
And, think the German adverb "davon."

Reason: sp.
From personal experience flashing 0.0 means that the gas tank really is empty -not running on reserve. Yeah, the greatness that is me ran the car out of gas trying to get back to my regular gas station -yeah me.
If memory is correct the total fill up was just under or over 9 gallons total.
At least around here (southern california) there are more than a few gas pumps that are off by quite a significant margin. More than once I've "put" far more gas into a tank than the known size (ran dry refill). Which goes toward people's "oversized" gas tanks.
Is that document any more acurately translated than the U.S. Owners Manual and other supporting documentation?
Again, translate and understand the German adverb "davon." The original German text: [“Tankvolumen/davon Reserve in l ][ 33/5”]. Hint: davon means "of it or them," from it or them," "away from it or them."

The reason Smart Center Portland said the tank size was 10 gal rather than 8.7 is that they got a call from a customer who ran out of gas right by a gas station. His tank still read 0.1g yet he filled with 9.7g. This underscores that some fuel level indicators are different than others.
I've easily run 20 miles past 0.0g and fit less than 9 gallons in the tank.
It may also be that - depending on the fuel pump particulars - there's still fuel remaining when a car "runs out of gas." Fuel pumps are not a bottom drain but more like a sump pump. So while the useful fuel level may be well over 9 gallons for some people, it may be less for others.
