Exactly the same conclusion one can reach after reading the 157 posts in
1.3 Gallon Reserve
and other locations in the Forum.
That's why my general answer was addressed to the less maths inclined drivers who needs to know if it's safer to turn back, or attempt to go ahead to the next station (and not the ScanGauge settings).
For the sake of it:

Fuel tank
The fuel tank is located in front of the rear axle under
the seats. It is made of polyethylene and is formed
such that the available installation space is used to an
optimum. The capacity of the fuel tank is 8.72 gallons
(33 liters), including a 1.32 gallon (5 liter) reserve.
The intank fuel supply system consists of a fuel pump
with fuel level sensor, fuel pressure regulator and an
integrated fuel filter.
That may explain why the dash gauge is not as accurate and linear as one could or should expect.

Gasoline Capacity and the Reserve

Does the total gasoline capacity of 8.7 gallons include the reserve or not? I didn't find it in the manual. How much is the reserve?

The standard diction still doesn't answer the question. Does "including" mean "in addition to" or is it "inclusive" to which point the term "reserve" makes little sense?

There you go throwing doubt into it! And since doubt remains, I'll call scP in the morning and talk with Bryce and Darin. I have never put more than 8.3 gallons in my smart and I've been into the reserve, many times.

Gas Cans and Accessories
A few of these in the back and you can cut down on the gas station visits. Life expectancy as well but hey.

Can we just get a collection going to pay someone to run his/her smart dry and then refill so we can answer this question once and for all??
