How hard is it to break-in to the smart

Well this morning I had the unpleasant surprise that my car had been broken into. There is not apparent damage to the key lock or windows but I can't help but think they wedged the window open and got in via that.

Has anyone else had any problems or thought about ways to protect their smart?

Being that I live in a busy metro area and the cars are built for these areas, we should probably come up with some tips and advice to keeping your car safe from break-ins, etc.

There are cities in the world where most people respect your stuff and don't bother it. none of us live there so lets move on. As a long time roadster owner I dont even lock the doors with the soft top. You can't leave anything visible in your car, the better it looks to a thief the less time it will stay there. Most cops talk about lighting being a good thing my book you just make it easy for them to see.
To summarize (1)take your stuff out of the car as soon as you can (don't worry it is only stuff, you can get more.

If you have the alarm option the alarm should have sounded. I always keep my smart in the garage for security reasons at night, and in the day I keep it inside our building at work.

The last few morning I've found my car unlocked when I thought I locked it heading into the house. I also thought it had an auto locking feature. No big deal for me as no one in there right mind would go on anyones property out where I live so many times things are left unlocked. I have a sign posted "Trespassers will be violated" right out front.

I can't help but wonder if it happened to just be unlocked. I hope they didn't get too much of value.

I had trouble, too, thinking I had locked my smart when I had not. I too have the alarm and they were probably only (only, as if that makes it any better) after "stuff" 'cause who'd steal a smart? They are so recognizable how would they sell it?

If your car isn't too far from the key fob, when you sit, you can squeeze the button and either lock or unlock your car, even unlatch the rear window.

The first night I had mine home, I clicked it, walked away, had my sweet dreams and awoke in the morning to find it UN-locked. I studied the key and realized with the non-functional convertible-open button (I have a hardtop) the and unfamiliarity with a new key, it's easy to 'miss' the correct button to lock. Maybe that's what's tripping people up?

You'll get use to it: ALL coupé fob's buttons are functional. When the car is locked, it flashes three times (and beeps with theft alarm).
You must have hit the hatch release (it requires a 2 seconds push to activate).

It would be nice if the remote buttons were different colors.

Well, they *are* in different positions on the key. That works for me now that I know what each button controls. If I didn't know that yet, colors wouldn't help me much. Your mileage may vary, of course.
