How many miles so far and hows your Smart holding up?
Since we are starting to see deliveries, I thought now would be a great time to ask "How many miles so far and hows your Smart holding up?". We'd like to hear everything about your experience so far. Tell us everything from initial impression to "Hey, am I the first to reach 100,000 miles?" no detail too small. So, how is your Smart holding up?
325 miles in one week. Only problem so far was my failure to put the gas cap on tight after the first fill up. Turned on the check engine light and engine ran rough. Turned off the car, tightened the cap, all is good.
Raining a lot this week, auto windshield wipers are okay, but not perfect when the rain comes and goes.
Big test this week is the car wash (hand wash only, thank you) and another tank of gas. Will try mid-grade 89 this time from ARCO. But Costco premium 91 is almost the same price in Los Angeles.
238 miles in 2 days...loved every minute of it...UNTIL the engine malfunction light came on. I have not put gas in it OR removed the gas cap. The dealer took it on a flat bed today and gave me a VW Jetta to drive until they figure it out. I figure it is a burp in the system and nothing is really wrong...but I ain't driving it until it is checked out. Will keep you posted.
1000 miles since I took delivery on the 17th. I think I may have been the second in the country behind the e-bay guy in NYC - wish I had gotten the free set of panels
Also did the 'gas cap' thing. You're not alone dickey.
Temperature in Michigan has not gotten above freezing so mileage has not been as high as some reports. I've gotten mid 30's, one road trip into the 40's.
No problems, great on the freeway - luv'in it. The radio sounds much better with CD's, than AM/FM. Wish it would warm up so I could put the top down.
One and week and 700 miles later...........
Took delivery On January 19th, 2008 at Lincolnwood Smart Center in the Chicago area. Recieved a Passion. Silver with Black Tridion, Comfort Package, CD Changer, fogs and alarm system.
I got lucky in that while I reserved late and had yet to recieve a chance to do the real order, I was able to get a Smart the 1st weekend they were in Chicago. Seems the person who had reserved it wanted to export it and that is a big dealer agreement no no. So, they had an orphan and I adopted it.
As far as the dealer experiance, I thought it was 1st rate. I have done several deals at Carmax and really liked their no nonsense aproach. Buying a Smart is similar. The price is the price, so no one gets a better deal, or can give one. It's tax, title, license, and your done.
I did take an extended warranty of 5 years/ 75000 miles, but that was it. Finance was a snap, and they all seemed really happy to have things rolling.
The car feels good. More solid that you expect and in my opinion, you can tell it is a Daimler product. Drives very German (as in solid). The interior does NOT have plastic for miles, almost seems plush. The top speed is 90 MPH, but if it were not limited to that I'm sure it would go faster. For me that is important because you can cruise at 70mph all day and have power to pass and the engine does not seem to be working too hard.
It is very quite until you get past 70 mph and then it is wind noise that ramps up higher then I'd like. So I'll drive 70, ok?!
Does well in the snow, with the traction control etc. It reminds me of an old VW beetle in that with the rear drive and engine it will just go where you put it in the snow.
No oil use, and 35 MPG in mixed driving.
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE says it is "Cute".
They are also surprised by the price. One guy guessed I payed twice as much as I did.
So after a week, I am driving it every chance I get, and I'm more impressed each time.
Oh and filling it with gas is less then $30. My Durango cost $70. The Durango is spending more time parked lately. (-;
I now have 500 miles on my smart... have owned over 30 cars including Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Acura, Honda, VW, Scion... yet the smart is BY FAR my favorite-car-to-date of all that I've owned. It's still too early to say long-term how this will go, but no car has called me so strongly to get in it and drive somewhere... anywhere...
It's not the biggest, nor the fanciest, nor the sportiest, nor the most luxurious... but it is tight, wickedly fun, and a superbly well-executed example of how a manufacturer can stay faithful to its core design philosophy. I can't imagine how any car could bring a bigger smile to one's face. Sometimes less IS more!
Anyone who gets out of the order-line, great! I'll be re-ordering this week and prefer not to wait so long the next time, hehe.
Just had mine since Saturday, but had to drive 326 miles home. Everything was great with the car. Drove fantastic. So easy to forget your driving such a small car. I have not had any problems yet, but I have noticed a wind whistle that seems to be coming from the passenger side upper window or top corner of the windshield. The rubber seal looks great on the door so I don't think it is from that, but I will need to put a water hose to it to see if there is a possible leak problem. It seems to whistle most around 50 to 60 mph. Doesn't seem to do it on the drivers side. Anyone else had any issues like this? Oh, it is a passion, not a cabrio.
