How many other 08 on original trans software?

I'm just wondering if there are many others out there that are still running around with the original software? Haven't been back to the selling dealer since purchase March 08. Personally I like the quirks but wondering if by not getting the update I might be reducing the clutch life.

Because you have an 08 you might nees a new clutch at some point anyway. Many of us have had them replaced under waranty. Of course if you get it replaced you will be udated on the software.
I do like being able to to jump into manual and back out quickly with the paddles when I need the extra passing power

Yeah, I worried about that aspect, too. And I used to drive with my right hand on the clutch because I was constantly switching into N in an attempt to coast downhill as a gas-saving technique. Ultimately I decided that coasting in D is better for the car (clutch issue, etc) and that it probably saves even more gas because of the way the transmission is designed.

The car behaves better with the updated software, and I'm very glad for it.

I would just guess that the add'l wear-and-tear on the gear shifter would take its toll.

As some of you will have read by now, my clutch plate died at 64,000 miles, but that's mostly under very 'soft' driving conditions (I drive an average of 55 mph on the highway and have almost never revved the car above 3000 rpm; I accelerate very slowly and, for the past 40,000 miles or so, I leave the car in gear 5 and just pulse and glide to maximize MPGs).

The ride is much smoother after the update, and I'd bet that the 2009s are even smoother. Staying with the 1.0 on purpose is very silly.

I dislike the paddles and use D exclusively. However I haven't been so fed up that I have yanked them yet since they are just in the way, not an operational nuisance so the feature of using them is of zero interest to me, but that is just my opinion and many are in love with shifting and paddle shifting.

My original battery died so I replaced it with an Optima since my long range plan is to carry this on my truck bed, but tipped up in the rear by 30 degrees, therefore upgrading to their battery would be a major downgrade to me.

Therefore I am still on version #1.

Having driven standards my entire life, I seriously enjoyed my first automatic tranny in my PT Cruiser. Since I spend a lot of time in the infamous Houston traffic, NOT having to shift gears on a constant basis provided much relief for my left leg.

When I learned that smarts have an automated manual, I thought "best of both worlds !!"

I tried it a few times, but it's not like you're really shifting gears. It's more like taking a regular automatic tranny, putting it in 3, then sliding it to 2, then ending up in D.

So yep, my smart stays in D probably 99.9% of the time.
