Hi everyone, I tried searching, but didn't find anything here, so I'll post the question. I'm looking into buying a Smart Passion. How much will I end up paying if I waited in line for purchasing one vs. If I bought a new one from a private party or a dealer? Thanks for your help.
The MSRP you're quoted upon your $99 reservation is firm. For any sales at the Dealer you would have to add the Dealer Fees, taxes, registration, etc...
Some Dealers do add options on their orphans - reserved but unsold cars (Lo-Jack, tint, bra, navigation...). Some sell for MSRP. Private sales are, well, private!
Good luck!
No difference unless the dealer marked it up from their own add ons (GPS, lojack, etc...) As for private party, it'd be less I'd hope. since it would have likey been used.

Because I know a person who has got hold of their new Passion and trying to sell it, now I want to see how much of a premium i'd be paying just by buying it now compared to what I'll end up paying eventually after waiting on a wait list. I know it requires a deposit of $99 now, but I'd have to pay for the rest eventually.

In your case, I'd "configure" a car similar to the Passion you've been offered, and compare the two. May the better win: private or patience...
Lots of speculation in pricing, with prices on a Cabriolet advertised in the 20s on AutoTrader.com and Cars.Com. Even if you find a private seller willing to part with his Smart for for what he paid for it, they usally want to recover their taxe es and fees, which can be a couple of thosand, depending on the state. Cabriolets are hard to find, escpecially red ones, and bring top dollar. Market still strong, while not as hot as it was a few months ago.
-Some dealers (not smart dealer) that get ahold of a used smart is more likely to mark it waaaay higher than MSRP (sticker).
-You might get lucky with an Orphan at sticker price but you have to tell them "NO ADD-ONS" or they might give you something that the factory didn't install.
-If you reserve, you'll get the sticker price, anxiousness and possible loss of hair, but after 12+ months, you'll get exactly what you wanted.
-Getting one from a private party will just be a private barter.
Configure as suggested in post #6. And, if the car is not new, i.e. has some miles on it, I wouldn't expect to pay a new price for it. Certainly not a premium.
