I have had mine since March 3 and knock on wood, no problems at almost 4000 miles. I do believe that we tend to see more problems here on the forum because people need help when they have a problem. We will not see too many posts titled:

"Car running fine, no problems, what should I do?"

Still, I am a Toyota person. I fully expect to have reliability problems with this car as compared to my 10 previous Toyotas. Realistic expectations are key.

well said meaux - perhaps we need a thread of just plain happy smart owners, so that those interested in taking the plunge will feel more comfy...

Thanks Seadoc. Maybe it is like everything else, good news is boring. Can you say "Nancy Grace"? How does that woman have a job? She delivers BAD NEWS.

I expect my Smart to arrive towards the end of this year to the first quarter of next. I figure that many of the bugs of a first year will be worked out plus maybe they will add some options like cruise control and tilt wheel. Just my .02 worth.

I am certainly happy with my smart, just am a little sad that its not as reliable as I thought. Hope it is just a one time thing and I wont see the dealer for another 5k miles except for a social visit.

That is almost surely true. The dealership has resulted in more stress than with any major purchase I've ever made. I can't say yet if there were problems with the service department, but the sales reps at Smart Center Buffalo clearly were not trained very well, and the GM agreed with me about that, particularly with my rep, Joe.

That being said, I'm detailing my experiences in a letter to the GM and plan to send it to someone at Smart USA as well. Does anyone have any contacts/suggestions? There's nothing on the smartusa website.

I am pleased to say that in the first 1000 miles, I have experienced no real problems aside from the normal learning curve. I have had two separate occasions where I have come to a stop, placed the shifter in reverse, and heard a loud "clunk" and the car lurches forward. The display indicated either "N" or blank. Once I moved the shifter slightly, it seemed to find reverse ok. A problem with the linkage, or just my hasty shifting? Don't know. But I am still very happy with my car and hope all of you others can get your problems resolved as painlessly as possible.

I'll hit 1000 miles today and the only problem I've had was the check engine light going on last week. This was handled quickly and easily by the dealer and didn't cause me much inconvenience. Of course, I live less than 15 miles from the dealer. I took it in, they ran diagnostics and they replaced the valve ** it all took about a half hour. Other than that, it's been great so far.
