I think the expression you are looking for is "crying all the way to the bank"

I think the reason everyone is harshing on this thread is that the initial post qualifies the former smart owner as an official Used Car Salesman. I seriously doubt there is any sympathy on that one.

Probably should have kept it. Gas is going to keep going up and that 40+ mpg would have been better in the long run.

I had the same thing happened to me some offered me $4,000 over what I paid. I thought about it for a day and told him come on down you the next owner of this smart fortwo. Can't pass the opportunity to make 4 G for a car. I just wait and get another one.

It depends on which county he lives in but it will be 6% or 7% plus an Ad Valorem tax of up to $500. This could knock the margin down to $3500. And if the IRS is reading this, it will go down to about $1750.

I find the claim of a $5000 gain to be a bit doubtful. My passion sold on ebay at $19,200, which I was happy to get. Most of the smarts on ebay have such rediculously high reserves, they never sell. Mine was the only 2008 that sold within the first week of March.

With sales taxes and ebay charges, I only cleared $2200. The cabriolets seem to be fairing a bit better on margin.

Take out federal and state short term capital gains taxes from that $2200 and it's not worth the effort and risk as a business opportunity.
