I reserved back in June with a dde of nov-09 to jan-10.
Well, the dealer called me with an orphan about a week ago with all but one of the things I wanted (the pods). Thinking it may be awhile before I confirm, And being extremely excited, I said yes..
And today, I get the email for configuration! Now I'm torn between waiting it out or just adopt.. I can't afford to do both. Gaaaaaah. *sigh*
I'm in kind of the same situation except I took delivery on an orphan, that I love, knowing my delivery date was a year away. To my surprise I got the e-mail to configure 9 months earlier than expected. After much thought I decided to go ahead and configure the exact car I wanted and see if maybe I could sell the orphan before the one I configured comes. If I can't then the dealer can sell the one I configured as an orphan. When I took delivery on the orphan my sales rep told me they like the opportunity to sell them so I felt ok doing things this way.
If I were in your exact shoes I would definately let the orphan go and take the opportunity to get the exact car I want with a not to distant delivery date.
Bratetta, I already know I love the car. Lets just say my sales guy knows me well.

Ask your dealer if the will give you a deal on the Orphan if they tell you how to configure so they will have exacly the the future Orphan they want.
Hmm, if that works I'll be pleasantly surprised. But a good idea none the less. He's selling it to me for the MSRP. Not Jacked up.
Now that I think of it, I also have a sister that took a liking to the eco friendlyness of a smart and liked the drive. I'll have to ask when we get together for Christmas if she wants it/can take it. I forgot about her until she just called me about stuff to bring!
When I configured, I changed from the original pure I'd reserved to a passion; and opted for this, but not that; hesitated on the color, and after an hour or so of tinkering, happily clicked "send". That was MY car to be. MY car, imagine: custom made, made-to-order, just for me!
No orphan would ever be MY car like that!
I know exactly what you mean.
But the colors are dead on what I want, and I don't really need a tachometer. My past two cars haven't had them.
I don't think I'd regret going either way. Plus, I might be able to make someone else happy without the wait!
Oh great, I'm answering my own problems. Figure...
If the dde says you have several months still, get the orphan if it has what you want. Simple. Note, adding AC and other options aftermarket is often impossible or really expensive, so dont plan to get most of what you want and add on later unless you research each item. AC, fog lights, roof type, tridion color, some other things are set in stone. Tach pods can be added for about double the factory configuration price. There may be a third party option also.
