I may orphan...

...a new White on Black Passion (all-the-way) in October - December (DDE). I have 5k mi on a Red/Black orphan that I am really happy with... but I owe about 19 on it because I chumped in for the extended warranty and ANCIRA put on some magic film and lojac undercoating of some sort.

I guess I'm just fishing for Ideas here. What would you do if you were me?

I guess this thread could be called WWSD. If it`s too much for you right now, I`d pass on it and make someone else VERY happy(other than the dealer). Just my 2 cents.

Snake - You could sell the Red/Black if the attachment bond hasn't formed yet! Even at 5K mi. you could probably get 19 for it from some desperate soul. If your conscience bothers you about that, I guess the only thing to do is own two smarts or Orphan the White/Black.

If you prefer the white, buy the car, swap the panels with the red and sell the newly red, almost no miles Smart! (Subject to loan and sales tax issues, of course)

I say if you can comfortably afford it and you want two smarts than go for it. Just don't make yourself car poor. That wouldn't be very smart.

Snake, Hard to suggest the right path here, but If I were in your shoes, I would have to look hard at my equity position in the orphan, and decide if I could swing the new one and escape with just minor injury's.

The one ordered is exactly the car you wanted, unless you have changed your mind on some things after you now have had lots of Smart drive time.

You didn't state a build date on the orphan, but lots of fixs have been made since our build of 01-08.
You may get a hassle free car with the new one.

sorry to hear that "snake". my suggestion would be to 1st see if you can get a 'short term' loan for the one coming in. if so, then 'flip it' on eBay or autotrader.com, take the money you MADE on it, pay off the loan and apply the balance to your current car loan.

while in the past i've been against such wheelin' & dealin' with orphans, i've since said 'if you can't beat them, JOIN THEM!'

Hell, i may even start 'reserving' one smart per month and put them on eBay. why not? there's no 'limit' on the number you can buy, right? AND i'm not a 'licensed dealer or broker', so smartusa can't prohibit me from doing so.

I feel for you because I am selling mine (BLK w HID) as well on EBAY. Though it seems the market is changing now that gas prices have dropped 30 cents a gallon. So if prices keep dropping, you will be selling either one at or below cost. Last month they were selling with $2000 premium, I guess we lost out on that deal. I have $18k total in mine with only 1500 miles and am hoping just to break even. Good luck with your decision.
