The crash test results and the video made it onto our CBS affiliate TV station in Sacramento (today's morning news). Great publicity. Regular gas here is about $4.00 The announcer said the Smart can get up to 50 mpg on the highway. Sure glad I already have mine!

If IIHS is more strict in their testing, why did the Smart receive higher scores from IIHS than from NHTSA? Didn't they only give it 4/5 stars for driver side front impact, 3/5 stars for passenger front impact, 5/5 for side impact, and 3/5 stars for roll-over likelihood? I seem to remember reading all of that right in this very forum only a few days ago.

i'd have to figure the latch mechanism for the doors is being redesigned/looked at as we speak. at the very least i'd expect a new improved design for 2009 model, perhaps even a recall/retrofit for 2008 models.

Door Latch Malfunction

I agree... this is the second time the latch malfunctioned and needs to be addressed by Mercedes-Benz and/or smart as to why this is happening and should they be replaced.

I also agree. They need a recall for the door latch in the 2008's. Shouldn't be too hard to correct.

I've sent an e-mail to smartUSA for their comments on the two door latch failures. Depending on their response may send one to Ken K. also.

since in side crash tests the car is left stationary and it gets hit by a moving object, the automatic locks would not have to be engaged. I wonder if the doors were locked during these tests, and if locked doors would potentially solve this problem.

The way I understand the standard, the latches must hold, locked or not.

Seems to have given us a little more 'street cred'.....On my morning post office trip I was stopped by a number of folks that had seen the CNN coverage and now think more highly of the little car....Penske and Co hit the right thing at the right time! Glad I have mine!!

Yes Jwight, imho...when the doors remain intact, the vehicle should also have an enhanced structural integrity.
One poor soul that just got his smart is even complaining about having to adjust the doors because they seem to rattle. Perhaps smart better review this door issue pronto, otherwise the article gives the car a respectable rating. This makes me as a smart owner a bit more secure when I travel in it.
