I agree with those who are not troubled by handling in windy conditions - definitely more buffeting than my other cars, but no problem at all. I'm enjoying feeling more involved in driving again - reminds me of my '73 Fiat X-1/9, '79 VW Scirocco, '83 Civic S and '86 Civic Si.

So far not a problem for me either, of course I feel it's not a huge issue. In this thread, http://www.smartcarofamerica.com/for...1688#post51688, The Silver Pellet observes that the manual steering is more twitchy on the highway/in wind vs the more civilized feel of a power steering equipped Smart - this could be part of the reason some people are having more trouble dealing with it perhaps..

Oklahoma OK !

What was the line? "Where the wind goes whistling down the plain".

Yeah, crisscrossed through your world many times, and remember how our old Micro-buss bounced around.

High time micro and mini car drivers here, and I would say the same about many of those old cars. But this is a new car world, and a different standard applies.

This is a car that may be purchased by, or for, a young inexperienced driver because it is so cool and cute.

We have been amazed by the reaction of young teen age girls to our car. When my wifes parks it in a mall there always is a group gathered around it when she comes out of the store. Yesterday at a stop sign, two girls jumped out of their car and ran up to take pix on their phone. (Here you go boys )

The point here is, just because you can drive it in in heavy winds does not make it a safe car under those conditions. And BTW, truck vortex has never been a problem with this car. Ours has power steering and will run hands off behind trucks.

A2Jack.

Yup, really it never happens in this forum.

Really people this thread is about the crash testing that the IIHS does.
I don't think they do wind tests. or even Truck vortex effects on any car they test.

I note a recent interest by IIHS in roof strength (in the context of SUVs rolling over). Right now the DoT standard for strength is 1.5x the weight of the vehicle, which IIHS would like to see doubled to 3x. It would be interesting to see the results and numbers from an IIHS squash-test of a smart coupe.

Except both of the cars they purchased are the Pure model which has the solid roof , but it would be interesting what results they get, as it will drive changes to my insurance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the pure has the same material, it's just painted.

I think the pure top is plastic, while the passion is polycarbonate. My guess is that the polyC is stronger. At any rate, the IIHS test I saw was not a straight vertical crush; it was against the roof edge at some angle, simulating a vehicle rolling onto its roof, not being dropped on it.
