I'm on the orphan list!!

Ok I was one of those late reservers who wanted a smart car but realized too late that an actual reservation was needed to get in line. I just assumed I could always just buy one when they were released in the "first quarter of January 2008". Silly me.

Well, I don't want to wait! (Of course). I just called the smart center weston in Davie, FL. They're not officially opened yet but they took my call. I spoke with a nice lady there about what they were going to do with the 'orphans'. She told me there was a list of people waiting in line for them. She said they wouldn't be going on sale to the general public, just to those with reservations.

She took my name and contact details, and asked what I was looking for. I told her I just wanted a Passion, as long as it doesn't have leather seats, and didn't have a lot of extras added to inflate the price too much. She told me that there were 13 people ahead of me on the "Have a Reservation But Don't Want to Wait" list. Of those she said about 11 had very specific details about what they were looking for. I mentioned I hoped to get one in a month or two and she said it seemed very possible.

Am I excited? Uh yeah. I did a little happy dance around the room when I hung up.

So for those of you who are late reservers: there is still hope!! Call your local dealer and let them know you're interested. I'm sure that those lists are really going to start growing once people realize it can be done, and once people start seeing these cars around and don't want to wait for them.

PS: Also, she said they don't have their cars there yet but are expecting them early next week.

I'm not taking that lightly. I know they're not going to drop the fee. I'm hoping to get something in return for it, like the extended warranty. For any other car you could negotiate the MSRP down to make up for that fee, but since they're not doing that with the smarts I'm hoping they'll do something else.

And I haven't committed to buy it yet. If they're jerks about it, I still might walk away.

ETA: I notice you're in FL as well. Are you planning on picking your up in another state?

I'm a #1369 and my present lease does not end until June, so I am not in a position to decide if I will fight the fee of $595.00 that I have been told my dealer charges.

Florida law gives them the right, but they must charge it to all customers, so eliminating it would cause them to lose their license, or at the least pay a fine. If you buy a Saturn, which is also a non negotiable msrp the same would hold true.

Let's see what unfolds. I would encourage all Florida smart buyers to post their out of the door fees here so we can compare the various dealers.

If I were you I'd call smartusa daily and report the obvious price gouging. Filling out paperwork doen't cost them $595. Smartusa said the would not allow their dealers to price gouge and I think they should be held to it.

the san diego dealer said that people who reserved earliest will get priority on the 'unwanted smarts' first.

I pretty much said I'd take anything but a Cabrio. Let me back pedal here though. My dealer hasn't got any cars yet (till tomorrow). If they have to sell orphans to rezos first, in sequence, then I may be down the list...still better than waiting for MY car at the end of the year. We'll see. Believe me, if I get an early one you'll hear about it. LOL
