The only reason you might want to do this is to get your hands on a diesel version..
Legally to do it you have to go through a bonded importer who has the connections and ability to get the vehicle USA EPA compliant. Possible but very expensive and ultimately not very practical ...assuming one wants the diesel for superior fuel efficiency to save money....
Some scoff law folks have private purchased a used Canadian smart and drove across in false temp status then falsely registered in a US state with local DMV folks who did not know better. Some folks have gotten burned later on these things as they do not have a legitimate Title with correct VIN assigned
I have heard a third hand story of Canadian driving across Legally then selling the car to American only later did they both get in serious trouble with conspiracy and smuggling charges...never did hear how it turned out.
Before PAG decide to import to US, I was searching high and low for some legal way to get a smart car and not pay ripoff ZAP prices
As I said in the lead in...it is legally possible to do, but always requires a team of Registered Bonded Importers to source the car, and modify to comply with safety and EPA laws...very expensive
