Inauguration Day Smart Style

Inauguration Day came early with the arrival of our Smartie today. It's been 14 and a half months since we ordered it, but who's counting?

The only glitches we've suffered so far has been getting everything turned off. Went for a ride this evening and when we returned home we (a) couldn't get the amber multifunction display to turn off: fiddled with lights, radio, locked and unlocked car from outside; finally turned engine back on and then off, and amber display eventually went out. BUT (b) the central locking switch kept blinking red. So, fiddled around some more and got that to go off (unlocked car, hit central unlocking switch from inside car, then exited vehicle and locked from outside with key. The manual is already getting well-thumbed.

Smart Center San Jose was terrific, and I'm glad we didn't have to call Elena on her cell to find out how to turn this stuff off.

Provided there isn't something else that's secretly on, I expect we'll start up the Smartie tomorrow morning and enjoy the long week-end with our new toy.

Now we feel like full-fledged members of the club.

The amber display will go off 20-30 seconds after the doors are closed.

The central lock switch (and alarm button if so equipped) will blink to let you know the doors are locked... they are LEDs - no worries about using up power or anything.

Welcome to ownership Study the manual carefully - these cars have some idiosyncrasies that should be learned about.

Thank you for the reassurance.

Today the automatic lock light continued to blink after we exited and locked the car, so we decided it was probably okay. Last night the amber light stayed lit for about 10 minutes until I fiddled to the point that it went off. Since then it has behaved. Perhaps the car wasn't ready to call it a night.

Well, but, we now have a flashlight installed in the car for emergency manual and blinking light situations.

It's all part of the new car experience -- the most common of which is to hit the windshield wipers by accident when you're aiming for a different lever. Quick. Who HASN'T done that in a rental car somewhere between the airport and the hotel?

Wait until you . . .

Wait until you get the mysterious "beep beep beep" after you've shut the car down and start to get out. I know folks have said that it's because the door was opened before the key was removed, and other such things. And I agreed until yesterday - I shut the car off, sat there for about 30 seconds collecting my things and it started beeping. Door was still closed. . . and key was out of the ignition, too. Put the key back in, turn it on, turn it back off - all quite.
Mysterious little smartie gremlins . . . that's what I think . . .

Don't forget to make sure the hatch(es) are fully closed, since this will also interfer with the locking system working, and the display shutting off. It can be a little tricky-they may look like they are closed, but even if not by about a 1/4" (or 6+ mm) the full shutdown will not be possible. I figured this out the hard way (just like everything else LOL).
