I have just got my quote from my insurance agent (Shelter Insurance) and here is what he quoted me. $368 per six months... with $500 collision and $100 comprehensive deductibles along with 100/300/50 BI Limits and 100/300 UM and UIM limits and emergency road service reimbursement.

Get a second opinion. I'm in Los Angeles and am about the same for $500 per year with $1000 deductable. AR can't be more than CA for auto insurance.
I use Geico currently and my insurance for a 2006 Scion xB is $624 every 6 months. Geico quoted me a total of $824 for both the smart and the xB (every 6 months), full coverage for both with a $500 deductable.
Location makes a HUGE difference in price - I just moved from Chicago to Atlanta.
Chicago = $335 / 6 months
Atlanta = $624 / 6 months
I am shocked that Atlanta would have higher insurance rates than Chicago. My son lives in Chicago and I admit that I've only driven through Atlanta on the way to Florida, but I'd commute through Atlanta any day of the week before I'd choose to have to go through Chicago if I didn't have to.
The construction around Chicago alone, seems perpetual and all I seem to notice when I drive there is how dinged up and battered so many of their cars zipping around me are.
I would never have guessed that insurance would cost more in the deep South.
called my Allstate agent, she couldn't find 'smart' listed so put things in manually with a VIN for a Passion coupe ... we'll have 5 cars with them by adding the smart and are of the 'mature' set (over 50) with one post-college kid (the Xa), live outside Chicago (NW suburbs) so:
100/250/500 liability coverage ranges - 100/500 comp/collision deductible - full replacement cost if stolen
$266/6 mo or $512/yr ... that's less than my Mazda3 ... pretty good!
plus -- I'm automatically covered when I buy it so no worrys there either even if they need to add it manually (we would be paying cash, no lien or trade, but IL still requires a proof of insurance card)
I am in L.A. and spoke with my insurance guy today. He said there is no actual rating # in their (all?) book as yet for this car and that based on that, they would calculate the insurance on the sales price (out the door) of the car, (which is sort of bs, why should I pay based on tax and license), anyway, based on the coverage of my other cars (100/300 and we have a 1M umbrella policy on the house and cars) and this one being between $15,100 and $16,500, the rate would be about $326 per 6 months with a $500 ded.
This is all I can share as it's all I know.......if it's any use.

yea, out-the-door costs including tax/license is wrong. they base the cost on replacement of the car and since they don't pay the tax or license, it would not apply. most insurance companies won't have info on the car yet. however, some seem to be listing it as MB Smart, FYI.
I am not saying I agree with the following rational, however some insurance companys feel that a single male without children is less responsible behind the wheel and therefore a greater liablity. Children cause us too slow down and take life more seriously.
That is, unless the youngster is in the car ... at which point most drivers need to go partially numb just to survive.
