Here is what the Cabrio seller is saying:
I received a call from the smart dealership in Devon Pennsylvania near Philadelphia that the smart car I ordered is at the Baltimore port and will arrive in a few days. I asked if the vehicle I ordered is an exact match. They couldn’t answer. I asked if other people that received their smart cars were exactly as order. They said nobody received any yet. This is the first shipment. For a collector the vin number should be very low. The smart cars that you see on the streets in the USA (2007 and before) don’t have vin numbers. They were bought oversees or in Canada and retrofitted (at a cost of over $5,000). The 2008 smart cars now made for America are much better than any of those you now see on the roads (pre-2008 Canada or Europe smart cars). They made the 2008 engine more peppy to accelerate better on hills and when passing. It has more room and was built to overall higher quality standard. Anyone who bought a pre-2008 fortwo would have paid close to $25,000 for this same vehicle and it wouldn’t have been made as well.
When the auction ends, immediate payment is required. Remember, you are not bidding on the car, but my spot in line to buy the vehicle. If payment isn’t made in a reasonable manner after the auction, I will contact the next highest bidder. The winning bidder and myself will arrange to meet and go to the dealership the afternoon of Saturday January 19th (or make arrangements with the dealership if you are out of state). If there are any problems, a full refund will be given. I am doing it this way because I don’t think the tax ($1,100) should be paid twice (me buying the vehicle from the dealership and paying $1,100 in sales tax and then selling it to you and you pay $1,100 in sales tax). Offers are welcome and if the right offer is made, I have the right to end the auction early. The dealership said the waiting list is 40+ and growing. Getting these vehicles will take time.
It will be interesting how the dealer handles this.
