Ipod Question for You Ipodophiles

Hit 3k on my Smart this week, nary a problem with it. Ipods, on the other hand, are about to drive me bonkers.

I am on my third "Classic". One stolen, one gave up the ghost (even a battery change didn't help), and even the shuffle has froze up.

So, #3 came in the mail from Amazon last night, charged and synced it up, went for a two mile walk with it this morning, and it worked fine.

Plugged it into the MP3 jack on my Smart, and find that it will play for two minutes, cut off. If I hit the round button, it starts up where it left off, plays two minutes, cuts off. It did this about ten times on the way in to work.

Only difference this time is, this is an 80 gig, versus 40 gig on my last two. Is there some setting I'm overlooking on this new "improved" Classic version?

Haven't used an iPod in the Smart yet as I'm waiting for the Touch 2.0 version to be released in July, but, from they way it sounds, it's almost as if you're having battery problems. Does it play OK when it's not hooked up to the Smart?

Pausing can be caused by loose internal wiring in the cable you use to connect from the headphone jack to the smart's ipod plug. This effectively fools the ipod into thinking you're pulled the headphones off, triggering the automatic pausing. You might want to try a different cable to plug into the smart and see if that changes things.

There's an extensive discussion and suggested solutions here:

Update: Several posters at the link shown above have reported success using the "i-Condom" method. Apparently, there seems to be an issue with metal on the plug of third-party lines and headphones coming into contact with the metal backing on the new gen ipod classics. The solution involves a small piece of saran wrap and poking the plug through the wrap, thereby preventing the metal-to-metal contact. Check out the link and try it; it might work for you!

Thank you, gentlemen.

I did notice it was staticky before it cut off, and I had that problem with the old Ipod I just replaced, too. Just odd it seemed to cut off at such regular intervals.

I'm thinking maybe I pinched the cable closing the glove box on it one too many times? Will try a new cable.

The old Ipod is toast, even with a new battery. On the off chance anyone knows how to fix the things, you may have my old one with my blessings. I hate to just toss it. Seems....sinful, somehow, ya know? I may even have the Bose Soundwave dock that also went out. I just have NO luck with Ipods and their peripherals, but since I have two other dock/stereos I'm kind of stuck with the brand.

Thank heaven they don't build Apple cars!!!!

I've been told I have very catholic taste, but then again, I've also been told I have no taste at all.

Well, please pardon my great big barking HARRRUMPH, and angrily crossed arms, but I'll be hung if I'd buy a car from a company who seems to bring planned obsolecence to dizzy new heights.

Am trying the new Ipod on the dock on my desk, and it's working just fine. Not a glitch at all.

Have read umpteen Google pages, this Ipod pause thing seems to be quite an issue. I'm thinking cable, will get a new one this evening. Sure wish they'd put the cable out the front of the stereo, instead of in the glove compartment.
