''Back in the day'' my 61' V-dub kept up with traffic just fine, with 32 MPG...
I'm one American who can't wait for my 70 MPG Diesel smart...

Shane...

the MHD has a switch so that you can choose to turn it OFF. i would certainly like the option to have it and be able to use it when the opportunity presents itself and turn it off as well.

bring on the MHD!!!

P.S. even though i have been 'anti-diesel' in the past, i WOULD consider a smart CDI, but i would prefer an EV..........

I hear that German beer has more alcohol content, so I believe the German version of this product would have more energy and thus cause a higher fuel economy.

Really? They seem to do fine outside of the cities on Canadian and European highways.

I've driven 2-cylinder Citroen 2CVs as my daily cars for 30 years, mostly on the highways, often cross-country, and have never had a problem. It's all a matter of expectations and driving style. There are plenty of utilitarian vehicles out there on the highways with far less performance than a diesel smart, and they do just fine.

Yeap!

I drive in Europe 8 times a year and see smart cdi everywhere and no problems.
Me feeling is that people have stereotypes and compare about the size of the engine and its performance.
BMW and many japanese car proved that 4 cylinder engines in small car can beat any big 6 to 8 V anytime.

Think Torque not Horsepower

It is torque that gets you going, and after that, horsepower keeps you going. You don't need that much HP to overcome wind resistance and mechanical friction to remain at speed.

The current 45 PS smart turbo CDI develops 81 foot-pounds of torque; the 71 ps atmospheric gasser develops 68 f-p. Guess which one has more grunt.

Alas, it is all academic - there are no plans for diesels, even though smartUSA has heard all the squalls and psalm-singing for them.
