Not a problem. You can shift a little early or a little late and you will get an arrow in the gear indicator box telling you that you need to shift. If you are too far out of range the car simply will not perform the shift you initiated. Even if you floor it in manual and forget to shift the car will do it for you when you get to red line. Mother Mercedes will not let you hurt her little smart.

The same here! Around 900 miles the Smart got very responsive ,the shifts in auto mode got firmer and carried the RPM up higher avoiding the engine lugging.

I use the auto mode about 90% now. Where before 900 miles the manual mode seemed the way to go.

Just keep driving and it will greatly improve.

I have never owned a car with an std auto trans. and do not care for auto mode in the smart. However, I love driving it in manual mode and only having to shift up most of the time. It is absolutely wonderful that there is no clutch peddle to push all the time! So, the trans is great as far as I am concerned!

I hope smart never caves and converts it to std manual with a clutch or to a boring automatic only!

Don't worry, somewhere around 5000 miles you don't notice the quirks anymore.

It has a rev limiter to keep you from blowing the engine and I don't _think_ it will let you down shift too far (not going to test that one... feel free to on your car ;)). If you up shift to far it would "lug" and be slow.

I`m using only the manual mode, usually the paddles. I don`t have any problem with the transmission.

Love the stick

I never drive in auto mode. Love the stick. Took only a little driving to get the hang of it. If you accidently hit the shifter the wrong way it does the same thing any other stick will do...work the engine harder than it needs to . Solution...shift back.

oh i see

So what happen if you see a stop/red light coming in 10 sec ? can you just use the break without down shifting ? (im manual mode that is)

What if you have to pull over or stop the car on 4th gear.. does it get back to its 1st gear automatically ? or do you have to downshift all the way down from 4th to 1st ?

It is correct that either (1) the jerky shifting in 'D' mode went away, or (2) my perception of the jerky shifting in 'D' mode changed completely. I drive a lot in 'D' and never have a jerky shift. 3,000 blissful miles, and counting!

I'm still breaking-in the engine, but shift and lift is the method to smoothing out the transmission. It's counter intuitive to manual shifting's where you lift and shift. I really like the paddles.
