Key replacement insurance

I've heard from folks about insurance to cover lost or damaged smart car or other exotic electronic car keys. Does anyone have tales or details?

Cost, and where from?

Thanks, Bob in KCMO

If you have lost Keys in the past, then get it. A replacement can be expensive.
If you have never lost a key in your life then what are you worried about

I got mine from the dealer (a add on). I already got one key. thought I lost one. the week I got home from the dealer to get new key I found old one.. You are entitled to one per year for the first five years. It was less than one new key priced at retail.

It would seem if there was insurance, then the deductible may need to apply; unless there is a loss policy with no ded and full replacement like they offer for cell phones.

SmartDigger,

Did you get a free key because you took an additional warranty through the dealer?

Do you have vendor contact information?

Insurance won't help you when your key is lost and you need to hit the road. Waste. of. Money

Well, no it won't. That's why you have two keys in the first place.

The insurance is for those who lose keys (and you know who you are), so that the replacement and reprogramming doesn't put you on the spot down the road.

If it was not required by law, there are many who would do without auto insurance. (Hell, there are already many who do without - we have the highest uninsured motorist rate in the nation down here.) As neither my wife nor I have every been at fault in an automobile accident, you could make the case that we don't need it as well.

However, insurance is meant to cover people for foreseeable events that are likely to occur. For many, buying a new key (and reprogramming the lot of them) is a significant expense, and the loss of one is only too common. For them, key insurance is worth the money.

But, if someone doesn't want it, no one is forcing you to buy it.
