I've ordered my smart through the same dealer (the only one) here in Milwaukee and have absolutely no complaints. My wife said the leather seats are required if I want her to go anywhere with me in MY smartie (that was a tough call ) so of course I ordered them FOR HER.....of course I did......

IMHO, leather, or its synthetic cousin, is the only way to go if you have dogs that ride with you. It may exist somewhere, but I've yet to see fabric that didn't get dog hair permanently woven into it.

i also thought it would be no big deal to add leather, dealers do it all the time, my toyota had leather installed before i picked it up, when i asked about it i was told, our company will not have leather installed, there is a liability with airbags, if i wanted it i would have to get it done myself, that was said very matter of factly, they had a very cocky attitude, maybe he was having a bad day, i was near enough to the manager when he said it. thats when i decided to contact my toyota dealer to find out where it was installed and who made it. then i decided to go to knauze, they were pleasant, and when i mentioned the leather thing, it was no problem. i ultimatly had it done myself from the leather distributor but the dealer would have been all to happy to install it as well. oh! leather breathes, its isnt hot in the summer, synthetic is, and as for winter, i dont drive it in the winter but did have heated seats installed at the same time.vinyl seats will make you sweat and do crack far before leather does. when you buy a premium item like this you tend to keep up with it's maintnance, i condition my leather several times a year and my toyota looked almost new when i gave it to my son. i did my homework on this company, seems they are the largest manufacture of leather in the aftermarket, to the tune of almost 200,000 leather interiors a year.not in smarts but in most any brand, great stuff. i like it. i will try to put up some pictures

Why didn't you just order your car with leather and heated seats from the factory?

Well darn, wouldn't you know that Smart would be the exception! I guess I could have ordered that red interior after all.

While killing time over at evilutions new site I saw how to take the lower dash off and remembered about wanting to do the interior in leather. I don't like the factory leather because it is hard and black. I want to start changing the interior this spring to resemble the white Brabus in the photo section. I think I will use Ultra suede but still haven't figured out what to do for the airbag.Does ANYONE have a suggestion short of paying through the nose to have someone else do it or where I can find the upper dash in black fabric ie;a wrecked smart for example?. I am a tailor in my spare time so I know I can re-do my interior it's just that damn airbag!

Just the Pasenger Airbag. No worries for you. Heck the chances of our going off anytime is extreemly remote since only the kids get to drive in the pasenger seat(airbag off). 5000 miles and my wife and I have only been in the car together for about 1 mile.

A lot of the re-covered dash tops have the airbag cover stitched in place so if regular old poly thread is all that is needed I can do that. I'm just afraid that if it is needed in a collision it won't work properly. Will it just rip the whole cover off there by sending the airbag off in the wrong direction or won't tear through the stitched flap? I was in a head-on collision back in '79 and an airbag really would have helped.
