I went by yesterday at lunch. I gave Jonathan my card with my prefs written on the back and he said he was going to give it to April. There was a lady there that was apparently some sort of rep from smart because when I was talking to Jonathan about the orphans that got sold in Round Rock she stated they were all sold to reservation holders. Nobody said anything about that for a second but I could tell the gears were spinning and finally the lady said "It's up to each dealership how they handle orphans"...

The fact is they get a kick-back of 2% for selling in their zone - they can sell to anyone but just don't want to lose out on that. Pretty lame IMHO, another way of taking people's choice of dealer away which can be detrimental if 'their' dealer is one that is adding on fees.

Yeah, the seeming free for all handling of the orphans (not being the same dealer to dealer or managed to let reservation holders get on a list) is frustrating.

Need a second smart

I need to find a way to buy another one. One for each foot. They make great roller skates. I would think they should be matching.

I wonder who will be 1st to sue over this sales system, it seems as though this violates my God-given right as an American to buy anything anywhere anytime as long as I can throw enough money at the seller.

Smart USA better watch out: you better not piss off the rich by treating everyone equally and sticking to 1st come 1st served. Remember, those folks keep lawyers on retainer and sue just for their amusement!

I know you are being sarcastic, but I don't see the issue because some dealers are clearly handling the orphans any way they wish and the first come/first served reservationists thing is not necessarily happening. It seems to be all over the map..

What about fleet sales? I forsee The Geek Squad switching to smarts from New Beetles, if only they could get 1000 or so cars.

I haven't seen any mention of commercial and rental sales in any of their literature. A cabrio would make a great city rental for a tourist or sightseer, same with delivery services, a tiny car would be very useful. But how does one go about getting a dozen or so smarts?

PAG/IB/smartUSA has stated that they do not intend to take fleet orders at this time, that if a commercial operation wants them they have to go through the same process as "the common man." It looks like they would have to have an awful lot of drivers licenses and email address available.

The Work Around

You do need to change your email address, for most that is an easy to do. Use a work account or create an alias / child with your current host yahoo, aol who ever it is. Second they are going to match up your drivers license # when you go to pick it up. My intent is to treat my spouse to a new commuter toy. We need to go together to the dealer for pick up, hence two people needed to drive it home anyway. PAG's intent is to avoid brokers selling reservations I put a dash after the first letter. This was my work around. The intent to purchase for home use is pure, I do not intend to sell neither smart and my hope is my second reservation will have the start stop mode.
