It was a trick originally developed for the 2003 MB C230 with the panoramic roof. The 2002 model had major wind buffeting at highways speeds and in 2003 they introduced this as a fix. Since then it has appeared in numerous MB and Chrysler products as a way to reduce wind buffeting noise.
