I think it is pretty much understood that locks only keep out the honest people. As you said, if someone want what you have, they will fabricate a method to obtain it.
However, in my case a lock in the plastic tailgate compartment would keep my kids from seeking their regular "band-aid fix" from my high-dollar travel first-aid kit.

Would one check if it is possible to open the tailgate from the inside while it's latched? Who has the car at hand without running too far (mine is up the street)...

I am assuming your question is opening the gate storage compartment with the gate closed. If so, yes. Accidentally done that before. You can open the compartment and dump your stuff in the cargo area, no problem. So, probably not a good place to store your prized marble collection!
If you are referring to opening the gate itself, the upper must be opened first, which cannot be accomplished from the inside.

Try www.pelican.com. They have a huge selection of tough, lockable boxes. If it ever breaks, they replace it, forever!

What I WOULD like to have would be a lockable sliding drawer under the seat on at least the passenger side. A bit of closed storage would really come in handy sometimes and that is some space that's available it would seem....

Your first assumption is correct. Does one see an easy way to install a lock?

They have a calculator to determine the size that you might need.

Same concept but perhaps cheaper: locking cash box.

You could try getting a locking cash box and shoving it into the space just behind the glovebox; there's plenty of room back there, which is why several folks on this forum have installed subwoofers in that space. I'm sure someone can come up with a clean installation.

You can see if Bestop will make one for the Smart Cabrio owners. Here's what they make for the Wranglers -
