wondering what the opinions are. i would imagine i would like the turbo better so i can modify it but i want other opinions. if i do want a turbo are there any differences year to year that i should know about. i really want one and am ready to buy. black on black or silver on silver i think. let me know what you guys think.

One engine fits all, so your choice has been made for you... unfortunatly.

what we are saying is that... there is only one engine of choice. the 1.0 L, 71 HP, 3 cylinder engine. no turbo option nor diesel option in the US.

Geez

Before too long, some company is going to come up with a complete turbo kit for the 1.0 liter. Frankly, your better off piecing together a budget turbo kit. It's rather simple to make! I don't offer free tech support though.
You should spend your money on making it handle the extra h/p in the mean time.

so youre saying that i should go with the newer non turbo over the the 06 turbo smart and add a turbo later. what are the reasons for buying the new one though? is it more reliable? are there more aftermarket parts for it? what should make me want a non turbo over the mercedes version that has a turbo already. i would think that the turbo version wouyld be easier to modify. i appreciate the input.

Turbo is not important to me. Having a non gray market model that some dealerships in the US would work on was important.

Seems by what you are asking turbo is your big concern. In that case you might do better to get the used gray market turbo vehicle.

oh, your post didn't mention the possibility of buying a 450. Overall I would think buying anything prior to an 08 is now a risky venture, unless of course if your Canadian, then there is no problem. Aside from the higher purchase price, you are dealing with a very select number of places to get parts/service. I assume that smart dealers here wouldn't touch these cars with a 10 foot pole. Remember that the 450's are CDI and have only around 40 hp. I wouldnt be happy with that, but to each their own.
I would get a new model and wait and see what happens with the aftermarket.
