wow, it'll change by that much, huh?
(I was thinking it was more like a 5 mpg beating by going 70)

21-23 mpg

I am getting 21-23 mpg driving in Los Angeles, all flat. that is certainly a lot less then the EPA 33 mpg city. What about truth in advertising?
SMART suggested to take the car to the dealer. The dealer asked to save the gas receipts to prove that I only get premium gas. I guess they don't want to admit that the US version of the SMART is a gas guzzler.
If they can't fix this I'll get rid of the car, as much as I enjoy driving it.
My MB 230 Coupe Kompressor gets almost the same mileage, so did my BMW 325.

just because you want to believe it, does not make it true. so many of us are getting great gas mileage.

sometimes, the answer is in the mirror. :crybaby:

mileage

All I can say is that when I fill up and figure out my mileage and it's only 41mpg I get depressed because it's generally in the 44-46 range.

honestly, after the first few tankfuls i can't get too interested in tracking MPG anymore. life is too short and there are too many other important things to me than losing sleep over minor weekly variances in estimated MPG averaged over the course of a tank and ~400 or so miles.

i sleep well knowing that it's at the top of the range for fuel efficiency short of a hybrid. i don't fall into the trap of making comparisons with other vehicles. claiming my xyz car gets 32 and my smart "only" gets 42 is a meaningless comparison IMHO.

lastly, i see in my bank statements that i am spending considerably less on fuel than i did with either of my two jeeps when driven on a consistent basis. tracking MPG on today's trip to work and comparing to yesterday's trip to work and the best trip to work and the worst trip to work is a bit too granular for me to get worked up about. i think some people could use a real dose of long-term perspective, and if they must make comparisons and find that another vehicle does better for their situation, then my recommendation would be to get our of their smart asap for as much profit as they can make and keep driving their whatever-other-car-that-outperforms-the-smart and quit the constant bellyaching.

I can't imaging my fortwo getting mileage in the twenties. I push it hard all around the SF Bay Area and 35 is as low as I've gotten. Perhaps a scanguage would be helpful in pinpointing the problem. Better yet a Kiwi to help prove the problem to the dealer.
