Maintenance & Service

I'm considering a smart fortwo purchase, but first I'd like to know about the cost of dealer service & maintenace from current owners. Are there viable alternatives to dealer service? Is service more or less frequent than other cars?

I just paid $99 for my 10,000 mi scheduled maintenance. They did the free winterization too.

smartcenter Portland, OR.

I haven't done anything other than an oil change at 5000 miles. I was going to try to do the immediate oil change when she was brand new, but I got busy and, you know how it goes. But, when they did the 5000 mi change, the oil was clean as a whistle - I looked.

I'm happy as can be, and *love* my smartie.

It's also rather easy to DIY on. The plugs, oil filter, and drain are all easily accessible. The plugs are due at 30K, but it shouldn't be too bad.

The accessory belt might be a bit of a challenge, and the separate belt for the A/C compressor is a stretch belt - so that might be a pain as well.

It's got a timing chain, but manually adjusted valves at 60K (IIRC on the mileage). That would probably be one of the only things mine will see the dealer for, personally. I have 57,400 miles to go, so I am not terribly concerned at this point.

Thanks, Doc.

Sounds like you could even save money by doing the easy things yourself & leaving the more complicated stuff to the Service Dept.

10K service at the warwick RI dealership two weeks ago - $87 out the door and they washed the vehicle too - even scrubbed the brake dust off the front wheels.

Guess I am wondering why 35. to change the oil. Can you provide a breakdown of costs? I have NEVER had someone change my oil and on my Honda Civic Hybrid it costs me less than 20. and that is with 0-5 weight oil (expensive).

We have 700 miles on our new SMART so have some time before I have to worry about it but still wondering about the high costs (in my opinion) for just a simple oil change... BTW, 200. in SF Calif???? What in the heck did they do for 200 bucks?????

I gotta get a quote for what the St. Louis dealer charges... I remember them saying $40 for the oil change, but didn't think to ask beyond that.
