manumatic vs auomated manual

I think I understand the difference between these two transmission types. A manumatic has all the attributes of an automatic - torque converter, planetary gears, band clutches and a fluid coupling while an automated manual (the smart's type) has a manual transmission's friction clutch with electric motors and a computer activating and controlling it. Both types allow driver control over shift points. I think I understand the smart's uses and limitations in this area; but I don't have a clue with the manumatic. Can somebody who has experience with manumatics explain how it's used and its limitations?
