While I don't usually engage in politically correct opinions I decided to make an exception on this apparently crucial matter.
From SmartUSA dot com
In January 2008 smart arrived to the States leaving its exhibit space at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (it is one of only six cars in the world to achieve this distinction and the only one still in production and on sale today).
Preparations for the smart fortwo began in the early 1990's with a Joint Venture between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch, the makers of Swatch watches known for their wide array of colorful designs. Nicolas Hayek, the inventor of the Swatch watch brought his ideas for an "ultra-urban" car to Mercedes-Benz.
Inserted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_(automobile) (The project, started by Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch, was nicknamed the "Swatchmobile". The name Smart is an acronym for Swatch Mercedes ART.[1] Intended to use innovative features (such as a hybrid engine) and be affordable for young people,)
smart remains a vital member of Mercedes-Benz Cars, a Daimler AG Company.
smart USA, a division of Penske Automotive Group [NYSE:PAG], is the exclusive distributor for smart in the United States and Puerto Rico. smart USA is headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
Mercedes-Benz took on this engineering challenge with the outcome of one of the most innovative cars ever introduced.
Full development of the concept started in 1994 and the smart fortwo debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1997. The response was fantastic. The smart fortwo garnered more print space and TV coverage than any other car at the show.
Production began in 1998 in Hambach, France. That same year, smart became a 100% owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz AG.
The challenge of the smart fortwo design started with the approach to safety. The tridion safety cell was Mercedes-Benz's answer for a small car that can meet high safety standards. The tridion safety cell is a "hard shell" that surrounds the smart fortwo's occupants with an energy displacing system of longitudinal and transverse structural members. Then the engineering team added Electronic Stability Control (esp®) and ABS brakes to make the smart even more technologically advanced.
Other innovations like the selection of energy efficient and recyclable materials, the removable door panels (you have many options to change the color of your smart as you desire) and a high driving position for great visibility and easy entry in a small car combined to make smart a true revolution in driving style.
Since its introduction the smart product range has continued to expand and now includes a sporty cabriolet model. And the innovation continues. We're constantly pushing the envelope of automotive design to keep smart at the leading edge.
Other sources: In 2006, after dwindling sales, Smart GmbH was liquidated and its operations were absorbed within the Mercedes-Benz automobile group.
Smart has also partnered with Mercedes tuning company BRABUS to produce several BRABUS-edition cars. The BRABUS Fortwo features a 74-hp engine, but the extra weight added by BRABUS body styling and interior features mean this version actually accelerates more slowly than a Pulse or Passion Fortwo (the speed governor remains at 84 mph). The BRABUS three-spoke steering wheel has push-button gear shifters. The BRABUS Black Star Fortwo will boost the hp up to 101. Mercedes will produce only 101 units of the limited edition car. It doesn't get much plainer than this that it's a product from Mercedes. The earlier Smarts displayed the 3pt Star badge.
The Smart is deeply ingrained in the Mercedes family, it was designed, engineered, and produced by the Benz family. If you wanna put a little star on it go ahead. Hell, if you want to put a Buick or Mitsubishi badge on it go ahead, I don't care, it's none of my business OR anybody else's what you put on it. It's YOUR car and you can personalize it any way you want!!
Back to the original subject, if you are interested in the emblems the company is offering then let them know. If you are not interested in the emblems then let's keep our unsolicited self serving socially incorrect, opinions to ourselves. geesh!
Sorry the thread got off course Mike.

nicely said smartie, the benz badge would look sharp, why not, then when u get tired of it,take it off.i know i went through lots of diff aftermarket items on my scion xb that i have removed and put back on.life is short why not ---to everything---if u have the means to do so.
I'm glad that everyone has an opinion on wheather or not it's right to do this but that was not the point of the thread. I'm trying to set up a group buy for people that are interested.
So if you are interested in getting badges made up for your SMART then please PM me and I will take a tally and put something together.
As a business person, I would forget about the copying the Mercedes tri-star for commercial gain. It would take very little legal action by M-B that you had to defend to make it much less than profitable. Concentrate on smart. Make smart/SCOA grill badges.
...OK..if you will like to put an MB tristar on your car Why put a decal?...go with the real thing...the MB Kompressor front or rear badges are the perfect size for your make believe world....
