I think there is a hybrid from Sweden that the engine only runs a generator and the electric motors power the wheels. The engine only goes on when the batteries are low or there is a need for extra power. This hybrid is more like the ones used in diesel/electric locomotives. It is very good on gas.

The MHD uses a larger alternator and a thicker belt.
when you stop, the motor shuts off, when you push the gas the alternator acts as a motor and spins the engine. it is very seamless.

there is no engagement of gears, no sound, just goes.

it is like a gas powered golf cart, if you have ever driven one of those.
step on the pedal, the motor quietly starts and you drive off.
