more smart-in-the-snow

Had our first really nasty snow here in the midwest since getting my smart. (15/06/08) I live in the country and my 50 yd. driveway goes straight into my garage with no place to turn around as I back out for about 25 yd. Got stuck several times backing out and I can tell you that the smart doesn't do well at all backing up in the snow. Going forward is a whole different ball game....the traction control really does it's thing. Has anyone tried putting one or two of those sand tubes behind the seat to see what happens?

I bought Autosocks (one set) and put them on (if necessary) once I get to my road, which sounds similar to yours. It's about a half-mile long with twists, and at the end, the driveway is rather steep. Before the Autosocks, I got stuck a few times (and my other cars were much worse off). With the socks, the wheels grip amazingly well, and the ride is much easier and safer. They're not expensive.

Already tried the back-in approach. Got stuck!!! Garage space is a pretty tight fit....but I did kick around the idea of a turntable to drive onto. The wife would really like that. She much prefers to drive out going forward instead of backing out. Under no-snow conditions I do often back in just to keep her happy.

No. Just the original equipment continentals. I'm sure mud/snow tires would make a difference. However , in this case things were made worse by a one-inch layer of frozen sleet under the snow and nothing less than chains would probably make much of a difference.

I'm sure turntables are available for the drive, and I know I saw one once on this site from England, But I don't think they would well when Ice is involved

Sounds like you have a little driveway turnabout project for next spring.
