I don't mind people asking me how much my car costs. I start with the base price ( I have a pure) the cost of each option, the delivery charge, dealer prep, taxes, tags, online cost(our dealer can issue our state tags) and the final total. Then I discuss the difference for the other models. I also kept the sticker and show it to them. By the time I'm done, they've got more information then they wanted!

"How much that cost?"

"Less than most Harleys, a lot safer, quieter and leaks a lot less oil. Gas mileage is about the same, though...." ;)

Most Annoying Question

I don't mind the price question because nobody has ever said, "Wow, I thought it would be a lot cheaper than that!" Everybody is amazed at how cheap it is. I think they're expecting the price of the Mini Cooper, which are expensive and get lousy mileage (and not nearly as cute).

The question I do actually mind, though, is "is it safe" or not so much a question as a statement: "I wouldn't feel safe in it," or "I wouldn't drive it on the freeway." People have been duped into thinking that surrounding themselves with 8,000 lbs of SUV is the only way to be safe. Fools!

And the funniest question I've had so far is, "Is that a car?"

Just tell them you were tired of getting wet on the golf course and modified your cart.

I round off. "Base starts about 12K, my model about 14K and the convertible about 16K and the price goes up with additional options." Yes. It can be offensive depending on how it's asked. So I just have my standard canned answer. And I always give them the smartusa.com website address so they can find more on their own.

Funny, how most of us were brought up in the USA to be offended by folks asking how much things that we own cost. It is a natural question and the first one you will hear in Mexico, Turkey and a few other places where I have lived. I've gotten over being offended and just answer the question; which is soon followed by others.

Doesn't bother me at all. It's not like it's some big secret piece of information. Anyone can go to the Web site and get the same information, so I have no problem giving it to them. Many people do start out by asking if I mind the question, though.

I've gotten almost the same question twice now in a week and a half since I got my car.

them: How many miles per gallon?
me: I don't know yet. They claim 33 city, 41 highway.
them: That's all?

About then I lose interest in talking to them and walk away.

I too tell them go to smartusa.com when they ask how much does that cost. Today coming home from work sitting at a traffic light, 2 guys in a car on my passenger's side, the driver was pointing down at my car and I could read his lips saying "What is that thing". I could tell from his body language that he was going to have negative comments so I couldn't resist and replied "A Car" and pulled off.
