MPD - Miles Per Dollar

"I like this statement - The smart car has finally arrived in the U.S. At $3 a gallon, the fortwo will get you 12 miles to the dollar."

I had just read this article a few minutes before and was going to post a link to it. Although I don't think the article is particularly well-written, I did like that they had the smart in there and the idea of thinking in terms of how many miles of traveling you get for you dollar. Thinking about it that way might really cause someone to reconsider making longer and unecessary trips when you consider how much it is truly costing you.

I confess to being one of those people who never gives my fill up much of a thought-besides how expensive gas is on a per-gallon basis- it just goes on the credit card.
Actually, I do that way too much with the credit card-I don't much like paying in cash-but I do pay the CC bills off in full ever month.

Good article

I too had just read this article and liked that the smart is prominently featured. We use a debit card whenever we fill up. But I have had to use cash on occasion and it's not a pleasant experience.

I like that miles per dollar or MP$. If more of us thought of it that way all the gimmicky Hybrids would stay on the lot. Cause the Hybrid option costs way to many $$$ to add to a car just to get a couple more MPG's. Sorry, I want to save money not gas.

Unfortunately, the math isn't quite right, as the smart and the Mini Cooper require premium fuel, so the cost per gallon needs adjustment for them. Even with that correction, our smarts do better than the Toyota Yaris, for example.

Unlimited 5% Discount Gas Card

This is a bit off topic, but important to this discussion. My avocation is finding the best deals on just about everything. There is only one credit card in the country that provides unlimited 5% discounts on every fuel purchase (up to 75 gallons per transaction). Other cards limit the total rebate to a certain amount annually. It is a small business card, so you are supposed to have some type of sideline business in order to qualify, but the card is called an American Express Business "Simply Cash" card. When you try to describe this card by calling an agent at the main American Express phone number, most of them deny this card exists. Call only this American Express number, 800-521-6121 to apply. There is no charge for the card. At 5%, that's a 15 cent discount for every gallon at $3/gallon, all year long. Adds up.

Costs/Gas+ Oil.

We put lots of miles on our cars and have always calculated our costs per !00 miles only.

We check the mpg once in a while, just to be sure all the machinery and electronics are up to par.

On the Smart (at 40 mpg and gas at $3.20 a gal) our cost will be around $8.00 per 100 miles. That's $80 per 1000 miles boys and girls.

What does your present car cost per 100 ? Wonder where the money goes?

A2Jack.

would really like these guys to succeed but that last reverse stock split hasn't done much ... if you notice as well the electric smart shown is the 450 series not even the 451 so the price should be even lower!
