MPG on 89 Octane

I got 41.4 MPG on mixed driving conditions (highway, stop & go commute and inner city use) on a full tank using 89 Octane.

I noticed a slight performance decrease but nothing significant.

No disrespect to Smartcarracer but I decided to see how much one would save…

assuming one has a commute of 20 miles each way a day, so 40miles X 5days =200miles a week
+ 40miles for sun and 40miles for sat
total miles a week=280
at 35mpg, fuel used per week is 8 gallons

in los angeles, 91 octane is generally 10 cents more than 89 octane which is 10 cents more than regular 87 octane.

so assuming one uses 87 instead if 91, one saves $1.60 a week(20 cents X 8 gallons) so in a year, one saves $83($1.60 X 52 weeks)
if one uses 89 octane instead of 91 octane, one saves half that or $41.50

Personally saving $40 or $80 is not worth it for me to go against what is recommended by the manufacturer. I not a rich person but can't feel saving $80 per year. It’s a non issue.

Smartcarracer spoke for himself and what he believes and....
stan1174 spoke of what he believes and.....
24-42 has used 87 octane for over 9 months and that what he believes.

BTW: I get 55-60mpg (American gallon)

You are right Stan, It's a non issue.

Still SmartCarRacer has a good point and that is a protest against these dam gas prices. If I can save 30-40 cents a gallon just to spite big oil I'll do it in a heart beat. These pirice hikes are just an insult. I'm tired of being a victim while big oil makes billions off our hard earned money. IMHO

Costco gives a choice of 87 or 91 octane, and with a business AmEx card, gives a 5 percent rebate on its already-low gas prices.

Pricing Trend

It used to be pretty universal here among civie gas stations: 89 10¢ more than 87; 93 20¢ more than 87. Now most places are skimming the price of 87 in a virtual gas war and jacking the price of 89 and 93 up, sometimes way up. What used to be a 20¢ spread is now a 35¢-40¢ spread. Though the prices there have also risen a bit now, the NEXCOM and AAFES stations are keeping a reasonable spread.

N.B. The Navy stations used to be Hugo Chavez's CITGO; now they are just NEXCOM.

That's going to be hard with "Mobil 1" the recommended oil!
