My conversation with a fast food employee.....

I had lunch at a local White Castle (fast food burger joint for those that live outside the Midwest) in St. Paul this afternoon. I was at the drive through when she initiated the conversation. She was a heavier set girl.

Girl: I've seen these cars before, are they safe?
Me: See this black thing on the outside? It's a roll cage. Not many cars have it. So yeah...it's pretty safe for a small car
Girl: I don't know if I'd feel safe in something that small
Me: What do you drive?
Girl: Saturn
Me: Oh...OK. (looking to my right I see her blue mid 90s Saturn coupe in the employee parking area.
Girl: What kind of mileage does this get?
Me: In the winter time it's been getting mid 30s.
Girl: That's it? Wow, I thought they would get 50-60mpg. My Saturn almost gets 30 mpg
Me (at this point, getting annoyed that it's getting cold and my window's down so I can have this boring conversation): Can I get some extra ketchup with that?
Girl: Yeah...it's in the bag.
Me: Thanks. Have a good one. Enjoy the Saturn (as I drove away).

I probably shouldn't have said the last comment. I know she was just making conversation but I just couldn't help myself

It's imposible to go through a drive through with out haveing to have a conversation when you are driving a smart car. I'm always afraid they will be distracted and screw up the order.

I have yet to figure out why . . .

I have yet to figure out why uninformed people feel they have to make spurious comments about something of which they have NO knowledge.
In this case the person didn't know squat about gas mileage on any vehicles - but since she thinks it should be getting 50-60mpg, she dismisses the car. Never mind that her Saturn probably only get 28 or so - when she can get it running.
I guess they feel that have to say something - even if they have NO idea of what they speak .
. .
Oh, yeah - I've gotten the same comment - and I told the lady she obviously had no idea of cars gas mileage ratings, since it performed better than anything but hybrids, at twice the cost. She left quietly --

I think all smart car related conversations with non-smart car owners should strictly be <= 2 sentences.

Q: how you like that?
A: Cool. (drives off)

Q: Is that safe?
A: Nice! (walks away)

Q: What's the mileage on that?
A: It uses gas. (rolls up window)

Q: How much?
A: (thumbs up!)(drives off)

Q: I think you will die in that!
A: I will take you with me when that happens. (drives away)

It's not being mean or anything. Just that the more you drag on, the bigger can of worms you might be opening and the more brain cells you might lose. Then after that...you'd be asking what's the point again.

Should of said something like, " If we both met on the road in a crash, I most likely could walk away from my car, not sure how you would fair."

Hehe I think of the smart as a mini tank. Don't underestimate them.

I usually say "I don't plan on getting in an accident" or "you're right I'll drive my motorcycle instead"

When they ask if I like it, " No I just drive it to pick up cute chicks... see ya" (its a thinker)

Oh memories...

I was at a Wendy's drive thru sitting at the microphone behind one of those Beetle Baja cars and as I waited for the employee to take my order I overheard him talking to the Baja driver in the background. Here is what they said:

Employee: What is that thing?
Driver: It's a Baja Beetle

E: What's the 0-60? 3.5 years? (saying from the Disney movie, Cars)
D: It's really fast

E: how many times do you visit the pump?
D: Not much I get over 40 miles per gallon

E: BS!
D: not kidding!
D: what do I owe you, I need to get home!

E: Oh Sorry (cuts off mic)
