Forest's Wife: Preface - I get up early so at 4:30am before coffee I can say some pretty stupid stuff (not that I don't other times, I'm just sayin'.)

So, I had become fairly addicted to the McD's iced coffees and had become a regular at the local drive through. The week after I got my car, I go there at 4:30am and the little person that I can become accostomed to seeing at the pay window said "cute car". I say "thanks, smaller is better, right?"....gosh did I feel stupid driving away..

stupid, stupid, stupid

Well, forest, even if the 'little person' appealed to you, stop beating your head against that wall ... you're married.

I've never had that problem at a drive thru. Mainly because I don't go through them for 2 reasons -

#1 - I'm a mileage fanatic and that would absolutely kill my mileage to let my car idle there

#2 - Perhaps this should actually be #1 because it is the MAIN reason I don't ever go through the drive thru. Those people are working in that fast food place for a reason - sorry, not a Holier than thou answer but this is from me getting fat from those places and it seems they NEVER can get my order right whenever I go through the drive thru. A few years ago when I figured out how much gas I wasted at the drive thru I started going inside - when you have them there face to face they seem to get your order right.....most of the time.

When someone brags about how their Tahoe gets 25mpg or Saturn get 42mpg, I ask if they are fanatics about mileage because that is well over EPA and if they keep a log plus how often do they check their mileage - every tank? They normally start stuttering and the conversation ends there.

If a drive thru idiot says anything bad about your car, use one of these. (always use them AFTER they have prepared and bagged your food and don't ever go back).

"If you had a good job and a brain, you'd buy one too."

"I'd much rather be sitting at this window than the one your are currently at."

"I can modify my car, the only thing you can modify is the amount of stars on your badge."

"I paid more for this car than you earn in 3 years, you couldn't even afford to buy this car that you hate."

"With an attitude like that I can see why you have to work here, enjoy the rest of your life handing bags of food out of a window."

"I know that the comment at my car is actually covering up a dissatisfaction in your own life, cheer up, in 3 years you could get a promotion and be out there in the wide world..... sweeping the car park."

In the five-plus months of driving the smart I have yet to encounter any rude, smarmy, hateful or stupid comments, nor any incidents of road intimidation or obscene jestures. I have had a number of conversations about the car, from brief ones to quite long ones. All were positive. I must be doing something wrong.

Most of us know that is a good reply most of the time for 50% of us, but I've seen a lot of women driving a Smart. Of course that would stop anymore derogatory comments about the car right then and there if a female said it.

She could just say, "Yes, I'm compensating for something." And leave the rest up to imagination, which is far more effective than any words.

I've been through burger joint's drive-throughs but two or three times and always had positive comments. However, I think you can get the most pedestal-status mileage by visiting Starbucks.

So many of those young trendars working there have been to, lived in or studied in Europe and are familiar with the smart. They'll tell you all about their memories and ask a ton of questions.

And here's the BONUS --- it seems the waitrons always "screw-up" your order in your favor!!!

"We're sorry we took so long, there is no charge today."

"Sorry, I know you ordered a tall but we accidentally made a grande."

"We don't have any brewed coffee right now. If you'd like, you can have a Americano for the same price." And when I get it, it seems to always be upsized...

I know that you are likely to get the same treatment regardless of the car you drive, but every place has an unhappy story and it seems that just isn't going to happen at Starbucks when I cruise through in the smart.

After all, if you had to look at SUV's all day, you'd probably appreciate a "little variety", too ( I crack me up ).

Cheers,
Timo
