I posted a pic of my Smart on a S-10 forum and got bashed for driving a clown car that wouldn't survive being hit by a full size SUV. Ever seen a mini-truck that has been lowered and been driven over by a semi that didn't see them?? HA and he says I'm unsafe... In the words of Saturday Night Live.... Jane you ignorant sl***

No... as of 2 years ago no new Saturns have plastic parts. The last year they did a full plastic coup was 2001. Having been with Saturn for 14 years (and doing all my maintainace there) I know a lot about them.

Saturns are great little cars, very safe if not a little low to the ground. The older manual models did indeed get 34-ish highway if they were kept in good condition. My old 2001 SC manual got 28 mixed the way I drove it, my smart is averaging about 40 right now with the same driving paterns. The real problem is that a NEW saturns actually get lower mpg, probablly in part due to the weight of the metal pannels.

Both are nice cars, but I really prefer my smart for a number of reasons. I can't haul 4 people around anymore, but I really couldn't with my SC2 either, unless two were under the age of 14. I also like not feeling like I'm being born every time I get out of the car...

I just had the luxury of pulling a 36 hour shift - got a few hours sleep (2) in during it and had to run back to work. The only place I could get some food last night was the drive thru at McDonalds. Conversation was almost identical but I mentioned how I hate drive thrus because it makes me get not so good mileage.

She of course had the reply somewhere in the conversation of "Why drive such a little car if you "ONLY" get between 40-50mpg. I was stunned at it and she noticed so she said, "I do understand it is personal preference though." Bit my tongue and did not say, "Why are you working the drive thru at McDonalds when you are obviously capable of so much more". Quite a long conversation, I even think she slipped in the old "What if you get hit by a semi?" in there too. Can't remember, I was tired to start with and still had a long ways to go on the shift.

I had a similar conversation about mileage.

Drive thru girl: What kind of gas mileage does your car get?
Me: About 35 mpg

Drive Thru girl: Oh . How long do you have to plug it in for?
Me: Excuse me? plug it in for?

Drive Thru girl: Isn't it an electric car?
Me: Nope.. have a nice night

This one I love...only 7 days, 6 hours and 18 minutes until I pick mine up and deal with this. (I'm not excited or anything )
