We have an '06 Cooper (a base car with a sunroof) which gets 33-34 in suburban driving and 41-42 on the highway averaging 75-80 mph. With the a/c on. It has the Cooper Works Sound Kit (exhaust/sealed intake system/ecu uprgade) which added 2-3 mpg around town and 5-6 mpg on the highway.
I've almost got 40 a couple of times around town in the smart, and above 65 the smart gets 36-38, period. It has a K & N filter.
The smart is a city car, but the Mini is truly amazing. Especially since mine cost less than $19k. The Works kit was another $600.

And I still can't figure out how Cadillac can claim they get better MPH City with their Escalade Hybrid over the Mini

It's interesting that the Mini performed much better than the EPA ratings on this, but the smart did so only slightly (actual mileage vs. combined EPA mileage).
VW TDI drivers are also reporting
way better real world consumption figures than the government.
In the ads for the Escalade Hybrid, it states that they compared the '09 Escalade Hybrid 20 city/21 highway with the '08 Mini Cooper S Automatic, rated at 19 city/29 highway. The comparison was limited to city driving. The print is very small...
