Yep, this is a phenomenon I started noticing last summer when gas prices were going through the roof. Why do people lie about mpgs?

I never argue with people anymore about gas mileage or any other things about my smart that mean people like to pick at. I've found it's much cheaper to take the high road, just smile and nod. I don't get stressed and frustrated and I save a lot of time that could be wasted chatting with idiots.

I just don't see it. I wonder where GM got their Mini numbers from?

Right after I got my smart, I stopped at the local convenience store to get gas. The teen age clerk was asking about the smart, it was so cute. When she ask about mileage I said when it gets broken in around 40. The boy that was hanging out to flirt with her, said what, my truck (a dodge Duly Diesel) gets 35 and that's pulling a trailer. I just shook my head and left. Nothing could convince him of anything different. Of course his truck got such great mileage was because it was always sitting there running while he was in the store for a hour or more.

I just like to say I got 300 miles on $16 or $17 Premium. MPGs can eaisly be miscalculated but $$$$ per tank is a little harder to argue. This is one of the first cars I have had that I can squeeze more than 300 miles on a tank. And yet it is the smallest tank I have ever had.

The numbers that were used were from a previous generation Cooper S (supercharged) automatic convertible... the worst prforming Mini in terms of fuel economy.

Enough from me though, I am about to go enjoy a $14 fillup of 91 octane and romp down the highway at 80 with the windows down

Our mini is a 06 S auto (wife's car, I got my smart) she gets low to mid 30's, and puts it over the road. It's a high rpm engine and performs best when driven in the upper rpm range.

VW Polo Bluemotion

Hello,

Did any of you see Top Gear (Brilliant British show, funny as can be!!)

Any way the episode I refer to is the one where they drove from some place in Europe to the ferry, took the ferry back to the UK and then drove to Blackpool.....

The most impressive was the VW Polo Bluemotion..... the model they had was straight petrol.... 1.5 Ltr motor.

Trip 760 miles......

Deal was they could fill up at the start and could NOT fill up again - they had to drive until they ran out....... (Jeremy drove a Jag, James drove a Subaru - Hammond had the VW Polo.)

It was a race so they had to balance speed, time and fuel consumption (since they couldn't get any more)

The Polo made it the full distance and won.....

In US terms it used 12 Gallons (One full tank to get there - and actually the car was still running and had fuel in it) - Miles Per Gallon for the trip 61 mpg (US) / 75 mpg (UK)

Nice....

Thanks

Ian

Pretty amazing to be called a liar or for somebody here (new paltz) to suggest fiction. For the record: I track my milage on both cars... since new... at every single fill-up via an iPhone application. I'm not the only one getting 40+ in a non-S 2008+ cooper. 2 co-workers (one with the auto mind you) are getting the same thing. Fortunately, having 2 cars getting 40-ish regularly is awesome. As for which car is "better", now YOUR fact is based on fiction. Owning both, I can tell you that in terms of parking in San Francisco or driving in very heavy traffic, I prefer my smart because it fits anywhere and I don't have to deal with the clutch. In terms of comfort, sound system, amenities, power, handling and fun, the mini wins hands down... no comparison. To each his own. I love them both for different reasons. Like every car forum, there are always those fanatics who feel their car God's gift to humanity. That's ok... but don't be obnoxious... you don't even own the '08+ cooper. I do.

That's exactly what my wife was conveying. The mileage calculation can be a nebulous concept to many, but the amount of dollars spent per month is very concrete and easy to recall.
