Yamaha RD350 2 cyl, 2 stroke (chambers,pods and correctly jetted) 22-30mpg
Yamaha XT500 1cyl stock 55-60mpg
Yamaha XJ750 Seca 4cyl Vance&Hines and correctly jetted 45-47mpg
Personal bikes and mileage, people would call me a liar on the 750 but I could average 47 across 4-tanks of fuel...smaller is not always better it's how you drive it...then again the RD350 had a power band the width of a razor the way I had it set up....

As far as cars easily could get 40mpg in my CRX on the highway running 70mph and honda had several highly efficient engines in the civic's HF/HX in the '80's and 90's that were better mpg's than the smart.

And that is the biggest argument I get regarding the smart.
Everyone seems to have a car in their past that could top the smarts milage.
But you cant buy any of those cars now can you.

You can also say I used to be able to get the same miles per dollar in a pick-up because Gas used to be under a buck.

.....and the safety features are a apples and oranges comparison. If we got rid of those pesky heavy safety features on our cars like say.....just the airbags and tridion cell for examples; that would lighten up the car substantially and it WOULD get significantly better mileage and be more of a comparison for a CRX and Metro. Plus we would be hearing a bit more about fatalities in a smart than we do now.

My wife and I also like to ride our 50cc scooters around town. Today we stopped in the same Chevron to fill them up that we use to fill up the smarts. The scooters only take about $2.60 each to fill up. They get around 150 mpg. Anyway my neighbor was filling up his car and saw us and asked how we were doing and what happened to the smarts? I said we don't drive the smarts that much any more as the 40 mpg and $16 fillups were killing us. The scooters are much cheaper. The look on his face was neat to watch as he tried to figure out if I was pulling his leg or not. He was still shaking his head as we drove off!

More than 6k on the odo, ONLY average of 35 or so MPH. That's 10 MPG more than my last car. And, it is all gravy! I didn't buy my smart for fuel efficiency. Gravy.

And that is also an answer to those who question the safety of small cars has there ever been a news report of the mass carnage that all thos unsafe small cars of the 70's, 80's and 90's caused? Thats because SUV's and big turcks don't hunt them down LOL.......

My comment on the CRX I had was just to illustrate that you actually can meet people who have gotten great gas mileage so just nod your head and talk about how much safer your smart is in a side impact than a lot of other BIG cars/suv's. And I feel much safer in our smart than in my old CRX or bikes.....
