Of course, it totally depends on which nabe you have in mind. But city parking is prolly a lot safer than rural/suburban parking when it comes to large parking lots, etc, because of the relative sparseness of the population.
I grew up in NYC and live upstate. My car is more likely to be vandalized in some quiet lot upstate than on the sidewalks on the Upper West Side (UWS) or UES. But if you left your car up by Yankee Stadium late at night, you might be at serious risk.
Still, vandalism is really rare in general, so pay for the lot if you're only doing it once, but park on the street if it's going to be a habit -- otherwise you'll be out a lot of money over time. Seems like odd logic, but there ya go.
