Just filled up 67 miles of pure Washington DC city driving (G-town to downtown at rush hour never outside of the stop and go world) manual shifting and running it out. It took 1.7 gallons - 37 mpg. Amazing! I thought the pump was broken.
My brother's Fit (similar route) is giving 18 mpg. My 03 Mini was never even close to 20 on the same route (07 GTI w/DSG was giving me 18ish ; C320 - 13 ; C32 - 7; Tacoma 4x4 - 11). Granted all those previous numbers were comparing 2007 standards. The Smart would have also disappointed under 2007 figures - below the mid-40s, but....WOW. I thought I'd get mid to high 20s for my driving based on the sticker of 31. If I leave it in D and let it short shift I'm sure I can get closer to 40.
Mid-30s for pure city compares to real-world Prius numbers. VERY impressive.
On my first tank, I felt like I had driven like a son of a gun, since I was driving on the freeways outside of Detroit and it was at rush hour and the traffic was flying which meant that a few times, I found myself flying, too...
Anyways, I also drove to the Toledo, Ohio, area shopping the next day and when I got home and saw the odometer was just rolling up 200 miles, I pulled in and filled up. I put in five gallons of gas, which means I got right on 40 mpg. for the number of miles I had travelled. I am pleased. I suspect that as the engine becomes more broken in, it will do better and it may also do better when I'm not pushing it at freeway speeds for a couple hours on end. I do wish I had a cruise control though, because it's real easy to look down and find you have gotten way over the speed limit. Of course, I think I will get better at maintaining a steady speed, since I've not had to do that very often in my the past dozen or more years because all my cars and trucks have had the 'cruise' option.
I got 26mpg with two thirds city, one third highway, However this was in extreme cold 0-14 degrees fahrenheit and with snow packed roads causing the traction control to kick in frequently.

My Prius is averaging 51 MPG on my current tank and that's with quite a bit of highway tossed in. If I were able to do pure city, and my travel distances were longer than they are now, I'd probably be able to get a bit higher.
Overall, with the type of driving I do, I seem to be averaging right around 47.5 on most every tank. The lowest I've ever got for a tank was 43.5 MPG and that was with nearly 100% highway driving on a long-distance trip.
I'm quite the "lead foot," by the way, and I have not tried any of the goofy tricks for extracting additional mileage.
Sean, that's great news. Can you say if it's all hiway, half hiway...all city?
My 39.46 was during the drive from Riverside to Las Vegas. It was about 80% Highway and 20% City.
However the drive has some very challenging mountains to cross. Altitudes from 800 feet to well over 4000 feet. Also my wife and I were in the car with 75 lbs of luggage as well.
On the Prius database at greenhybrid.com, the Prius II, for all users reporting, averaged 48 MPG. I averaged around 40 MPG with my Camry Hybrid, and over 65 with my Insight hybrid. YMMV.

Prius, shmius. My Yamaha scooter is averaging right around 90mpg for city driving. ;)
