We've used the Autosock on a Prius before. I was very impressed at the ease of putting them on and the added traction they gave. The one downside being that as soon as you are off the snowy road, you need to remove the sock. It tears on pavement pretty quickly. I was able to salvage them for one more year with the tears. As much as I love the idea, I think I'll go with a good set of chains next time.

I live in Montreal, so heavy winter conditions, ice and snow, are more the norm from Dec to March. This is the first year driving the Smart. I've had to adjust my driving style, slowing down starting and stopping more than a more conventional vehicle. But it does handle fairly well on flat surface conditions. In Montreal you can get studs added to "new" tires that greatly improve traction.
