This will be my 60mile round trip commuter car and during the weekends or holidays she can drive it. So should I tell her to live with it because I will be the primary driver. I will be sleeping on the couch. Yikes.

I think tach is a must if you drive in manual mode. Originally ordered my smart without pods, and then paid twice as much to add them later.
You can always order them and sell them later at profit if you do not like them. (Trust me, you will keep them).
By the way, I also recommend you to add fogs and security system. Wish I did.

EXACTLY! I ordered the gauges, alarm, fogs & stereo for my car which my orphan doesn't have. They are all worthy options though I might have been able to live without the stereo I still like it plenty. Sorry, I know you didn't ask but.....

The auto lights, wipers, P/S and leather are options that are nice too but IMO the gauges, alarm, & fogs are money better spent.

Also, a tach can help you notice when something's not right with any car.

My 2˘ ... the tach is useful, the pair of pods are 'art', and this is the Swatch Mercedes Artcar. The pods are crossing the T and dotting the I ... they just belong in a smart.

Maybe you could be the first to make this mod to a smart: Easily detatchable
pods--kind of pulg-n-play pods. You plug them in the dash when you drive it and stw them away when she gets the smart.

my wife drove our SmartCar for the 1st time tonight. Drank too much at the club with friends and she made that long .5 mile trip without a hitch. we don't have those thingies on the dash, didn't want them. when you shift, it pretty much tells you when to shift anyway so not sure what they accomplish. Whatever! Free country. *my free lecture of getting along with wife: don't fight with her on something so insignificant, pick your battles. Life is too short.

They probably will increase the resale value - they're a truly iconic feature of the smart. I can't imagine buying one without them. - sheureka

I am not a fan of the look of those gauges, but decided to get the option, as I feel a tachometer is very important. Even on an automatic, I have found the extra feedback from a tach very useful at times. It is all the more so with a manual transmission.

Another less thought-of reason is for those drivers who may be a bit hearing impaired, as is my wife. The sound of the engine revving can provide very useful feedback, and a tach helps compensate for not hearing.

Alas, I hate the gauges' look, being not much into the whole style thing. As has been pointed out, the clock is pointless from a functional standpoint. For me the bottom line was this: A tach is important, and the option is very inexpensive. So, I went for it.

All gauges are good gauges. Love my little pods.

Not a visual impediment - at 5'2", and provide constant imput...Art, plus function...

If you don't like the ~Art~ don't buy the smart...
